Gibault High School students had a memorable summer by traveling through Europe. One of the highlights was visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

Receiving $1,000 scholarships from the Monroe County Retail Liquor Association are Bethany Benyo of Waterloo High School, Nicole Mardirosian of Columbia High School, Jennifer Dehne of Red Bud High School, Ryan Mueller of Valmeyer High School and Ashley Blattner of Gibault High School. Attending the association’s annual meeting July 7 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds are, left to right, Sandy Benyo, scholarship organizer Butch Kunkel, Bethany Benyo, Joe Benyo, Pam Mardirosian, Nicole Mardirosian, Rob Mardirosian, Jennifer Dehne, Cindy Dehne and Liquor Association President Randy Rehmer.

Once again, the Columbia Police Department’s Safety Town summer program was well-attended by area children. Students were given instructions on safety skills, including proper school bus procedures, first aid, traffic safety, the dangers of electricity and what to do in case of a fire. Columbia Police Officer Karla Heine, right, organizes the program with the help of several volunteer instructors, the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department and the Columbia Ambulance Service.

The Valmeyer High School FFA competed in several competitions this year.

The Waterloo High School FFA won numerous state awards in 2008.
