A section of Moore Street in Waterloo near the Gateway FS grain elevator will be closed for about three to four months, according to Waterloo Mayor Terry Kipping. Work crews are replacing pipes and resurfacing the road.

Objection Filed To Columbia Crossing Petition For Advisory Referendum
Columbia resident Scott Schumacher filed an objection Feb. 1 to the petition submitted by a group of Columbia citizens seeking to get an advisory referendum on the April 17 ballot.

The non-binding advisory referendum would allow Columbia voters the opportunity to lodge their support or opposition to Columbia Crossing, the proposed commercial development planned for I-255 at the Fish Lake overpass.

In Schumacher’s objection, he claims in seven points that the petition does not follow election laws and is in places misleading and not factual. The Columbia election board will meet Monday to discuss the objection.

A fire destroyed Allen and Julie Greatting’s storage shed Wednesday night on G Road in rural Fults. Waterloo and Maeystown firefighters responded to put out the fire.

The Waterloo Fire Department put out a car on fire Thursday morning along Kaskaskia Road near the intersection of LL Road. Robin Rofkar of Fults was driving her 2006 Chevrolet Avaro when she smelled smoke. After pulling to the side of the road and getting her child out of the vehicle, the car became engulfed in flames.

The Karen and Rick Levendoski and their family, of Waterloo, are gearing up for Sunday’s Super Bowl. The former Chicago residents have been loyal fans of “da Bears” and are planning a gathering featuring Vienna beef, Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago-style pizza. “We are ready for a big Bears victory on Sunday,” said Rick.

Farmers Inn Restaurant closed last week after about nine months of operation. Owner Steve Duebelbeis purchased the historic restaurant in 2005 after it had been closed for several years. It reopened last spring following extensive remodeling and had a brisk business and loyal clientele for some time. Duebelbeis said he ran out of money and is hoping to return to the real estate business.

Mark Bundy of the Fountain Creek Band noted the Bluffside Tavern he played in years ago is outside of Columbia, not in Harrisonville as stated in the Feb. 2 Independent article about Fountain Creek Band. You can email cjfindependent@htc.net.

Rock band Moe Cash will play at Valmeyer’s Corner Pub on Saturday, February 3, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. County residents are gearing up for another entertaining night, following on the heels of the recent Fountain Creek Band debut. Members of Moe Cash are Dennis Schreder, Rob Nowlan and Tim Sippel of Valmeyer, and Brian McKelvey of Waterloo. Nowlan is a rockin' grandpa again, as his daughter Jamie and her husband, Brian Krekel, had another daughter recently, Violet Layne. She was welcomed home by proud big brother Jake and sister Jayna. No doubt Violet can't wait to see her grandpa play.
