Stumpfs Named Conservation District’s Family of the Year

Louis and Vera Stumpf, seated at center, were named the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District’s family of the year. The Stumpfs were presented the honor during the organization’s annual dinner meeting Friday night at Turner Hall.

Columbia Middle School’s McMullan Earns Best Of Fair

Lillian Landgraf celebrated her 100th birthday at the Columbia Convalescent Center January 31. 

Winning the Waterloo Knights of Columbus free throw competition Saturday at the SS. Peter and Paul gym were Adam Schmidt, Tyler Minnaert, Jordan Augustine, Tara Kennedy, Brendan Bement, Brian Reinholz, Katie Gyore, Courtney Schutt and Whitney Whitehouse.

Waterloo dentist Dr. Darryl Beard celebrated his 50th birthday Saturday. His office staff wore black in honor of the occasion.

Aaron Voelker celebrated his 30th birthday with a large gathering of family and friends Saturday night at Eschy’s.

Recent Obituaries
Agnes Straub, 88, of Columbia, died February 2. She was married to the late Stephen H. Straub on September 21, 1939. He had passed away June 10, 2003. Survivors include children Ardell (William) Weltig, Alan (Rhonda) Straub, Linda Hergenroeder, Larry Straub, Gerald (Carlene) Straub, Gina (Michael) Ward and Brenda (Michael) Menner; and brothers Henry Helfrich and Cletus Helfrich. She was preceded in death by sisters Emily Eckert, Cecelia Gasser, Rita Helfrich and Agatha Muckensturm; and brothers Anthony, Clarence, Alphonse, Edward, Clement and Gregory Helfrich. Funeral is Monday, February 5, 11 a.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Education Fund or Alzheimer's Research.

William Herman Wappel, 84, of Columbia, died February 2. He was a retired supervisor at Great Lakes Carbon. He was a World War II veteran and member of the Columbia American Legion and O’Fallon VFW. Survivors include sisters Dorothy Hamilton, Theresa (Arthur) Pier and Mary Kleine; and brother Louis (Evangelynn) Wappel. Visitation is Tuesday, February6, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Memorials made be made to Immaculate Conception Building Fund.
