Shevlin And Prange Named Valmeyer FFA Royalty


Erin Shevlin and Adam Prange were crowned Queen and King of last night’s Valmeyer FFA Sweetheart Dance.

There is a state-wide tornado test being conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. Several area municipalities and schools will participate.

Waterloo High School students receiving MVP awards during last night’s Athletic Banquet were Bethany Benyo, cheerleading; Justin Kinzinger, wrestling; Curtis Haentzler, bowling; Mike Augustine, boys basketball; and Jennifer Conway, girls basketball.

Columbia Chorus Kicks Up Their Heels


The Columbia High School chorus dazzled audiences this weekend during their three dinner theater performances of “Sing Out At The O.K. Corral.”

Monroe County Republican Party Chairman Myron Neff has been named to the newly formed Illinois County Chairmen’s Task force. The 11 members of the committee, selected by Randy Pollard, president of the County Chairman’s Association, will work directly with two members of the State Central Committee to strengthen Republican grassroots at the local level.

“I am humbled and honored to be one of the original first five selected to serve on this committee,” said Neff. “I have been vocal in recent meetings not only on the corruption in the Democrat party in Illinois but calling it like I see it within our Republican party.”

Dennis Dougherty won the red oak bar raffled at the John Mathews benefit Sunday at the Prairie du Rocher American Legion. “We had an awesome turnout and raised more than $15,000,” said Judy Krebel, one of the event’s promoters.

Carrie Gower celebrated a birthday Saturday night at Bobeck’s with family and friends. They were entertained by rock band Dr. No.

Angie Grohmann’s bachelorette party stopped by Bobeck’s Saturday night. Angie and Bryon Rahn will exchange wedding vows March 24.

The Waterloo School District will break ground for their new high school March 22 at 3:30 p.m. The new facility will be located at 1100 South Market Street, near the intersection of Route 3.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello released the following statement regarding former Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton, who died Sunday:
“Missouri and the bi-state region have lost a dear friend today.  I have enormous respect and gratitude for Senator Eagleton.  In addition to his numerous accomplishments for our area and the nation, on a personal level, he encouraged me to run for Congress and he and his wife opened up their home to support my effort. He was a gracious man who served with great distinction, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.” 

Recent Obituaries
Francis Kern, 58, of Red Bud, died March 1. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Carpenters Local 1361. Survivors include mother, Mary Cora Kern; brothers Denis (Barbara) Kern and Kevin (Rhonda) Kern; and sisters Peggy (Don) Dew, Pamela (Phil) Darula and Deirdre Novack. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; infant brothers Brian and Terrence Kern; and sister, Patricia Kern. Visitation is Tuesday, March 6, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow.
