The Columbia Fire Department helped the Mehlville Fire Department in their search this morning for a 55-year-old woman who jumped from the east bound lanes on the Missouri side of the J.B. Bridge. Columbia ended their search at 10 a.m., but Missouri rescue crews continue the recovery effort. A name has not been released.

There were no injuries in a two-vehicle fender bender at 7:30 a.m. today at the intersection of South Market and Route 156 in Waterloo. A Dodge Durango collided with a Chevy Impala.

The Waterloo Fire Department responded to a grease fire at 9:30 a.m. in the kitchen of Dairy Queen. “There was no major structural damage, but the store is closed presently,” said Waterloo Assistant Fire Chief Jim Dietz.

The WFD also responded to a report of a minor electrical fire at 11 a.m. at the large department store on the north end of town.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking March 22 for the new Waterloo High School. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m., at the 70-acre site along South Market Street, near the intersection of Route 3. A reception will follow in the cafeteria of the current high school.

The Waterloo Chamber of Commerce’s candidate forum is Tuesday, March 27, at 7 p.m., at the Monroe County Courthouse. Mayoral and aldermanic candidates will answer questions and discuss their reasons for running for office.

Initial ground leveling work began yesterday by Huebner Construction at the future home of the History Museum of Monroe County. It is located just southeast of Waterloo’s historic Bellefountaine House.


The Valmeyer High School junior class is putting the final touches on their class play, “Headin’ For the Hills.” The play runs March 23 and March 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The boil order continues for the Fountain Water District customers affected by the March 14 drop in water pressure. The incident affected only a select group of customers, not the entire system, reports Patricia Garleb, Fountain Water District’s secretary and treasurer. Those affected should have already been contacted. When the boil order is lifted, residents will be contacted by phone. Balto is a 3-year-old, 40-pound husky mix. He has beautiful blue eyes and is mostly white. Balto is an active young man that will need a fenced yard or someone who walks a lot. He is in the process of being housetrained, and does well in his crate. He will need to be with older kids and he's shy at first with men, but he is great with his foster mom. The society’s next adoption event is Saturday, March 17, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Waterloo Feed Store.

Gertrude T. Beiermann nee Goetten
, 84, of Columbia, died March 14, 2007, in St. Louis. Survivors include her husband, Eugene L. Beiermann; children Stanley E. (Karen) Beiermann of St. Louis, Mary K. Beiermann of St. Louis, Judy (John) Jacobsen of Columbia, Dennis J. (Denise) Beiermann of Elgin, and Roger L. Beiermann of St. Louis; grandchildren Christopher (Nicole) Beiermann, Jeffrey (Amy) Beiermann, Jesse Beiermann, Brett Beiermann and Eugene Beiermann; great-grandchildren Bryce, Noah and Gracie; and other relatives and friends. She was retired from Immaculate Conception School, where she worked as a cafeteria manager for more than 25 years. She donated her body to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia.

Edna Wirth nee Fidler, 94, of East Carondelet died March 14. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Zion Women’s Fellowship in Millstadt, Zion Happy Hour Club, St. Clair County Farm Bureau and Millstadt Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Wirth; brother, Fred Fidler; sister, Hilda Fidler; and a brother in infancy. Survivors include niece Patsy (Melvin) Morgan; and nephews Roger (Jeanette) Kassing and Ronald (Sandy) Kassing. Visitation is Sunday, March 18, 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., at Strauss Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral is Sunday, March 19, 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
