Today's News - March 21, 2007 A mobile home in the 6000 block of J Drive in Waterloo burned to the ground today. Firefighters from Waterloo and Red Bud responded at 1:45 p.m., but the structure was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. A cause has not yet been determined.Ground Breaking Ceremony Thursday For New Waterloo High School ![]() A ground breaking ceremony for the new Waterloo High School will be held Thursday, March 22, at the property off of South Market Street. Those wishing to attend the event are asked to enter the property along Old Red Bud Road - the country road across the street from Fire Side Inn South (the old American Legion Hall) off of the Hecker highway. The ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by a reception at the current high school cafeteria. Developer G.J. Grewe sponsored today’s Columbia Chamber of Commerce lunch at The Falls. Terry Grewe spoke to attendees about Columbia Crossing and addressed what he considers the two major concerns of citizens: Eminent domain and tax increment financing.
Recent Obituaries Melvin O. Valerius, 81, of Belleville, died March 20, 2007, in Belleville. Survivors include his wife, Hildegunde Valerius nee Keitel; children Laurie (Butch) Sparwasser of Waterloo, James (Sherry) Valerius of Belleville, Linda Hubbard of Swansea, Jill (Tony) Schaefer of Belleville, Jeanne (Greg) Varel of Bartelso, and Major Bruce Valerius of Crestview, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation is Thursday, March 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Strauss Funeral Home in Millstadt, with a VFW walk-through at 7 p.m., additional visitation Friday, March 22, 9 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt. A funeral service will be Friday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt. Robert J. Palmer, 81, of Columbia, died March 20, 2007. He was married to the late Mary F. Palmer nee Frierdich. Survivors include his children Stephen (Mary Jane) Palmer of Kirkwood, Mo., Michael Palmer of Imperial, Mo., and Paula (Don) Palmer Haltenhof of St. Louis; and grandchildren Dan (Klodiana) Pellarin, Ben Haltenhof and Sam Haltenhof; brother John Palmer of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and other relatives and friends. Visitation is Saturday, March 24, from noon to 2 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. |
