Car Slams Into Back Of Dump Truck


One person was taken to the hospital this morning following a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of Quarry Drive and Route 3, south of Waterloo. At 8:15 a.m., Rich Kinzinger Sr. was driving a dump truck and pulled out of Quarry Drive onto the southbound lane of Route 3 and was rear-ended by a white two-door Saturn. The person in the car, whose name has net yet been released, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Traffic was diverted through the Heartland Bar parking lot.

Ground Broken For New Waterloo High School


Ground was broken yesterday along Old Red Bud Road at the future home of the new Waterloo High School. Administrators thanked the VOICES committee, and the teachers, students and voters who helped pass the referendum that will fund the new facility. School administrators, school board members, students, local politicians, architects and contractors used gold-painted shovels to break ground, with Waterloo High School alumnus David Baxmeyer in the background using an excavator to raise a sign displaying an artist’s rendition of the new high school. Baxmeyer Construction was awarded the $1,515,000 contract for the earthwork and storm sewer installation at the site.

The City of Columbia is planning an open house April 4, to further discuss the proposed Columbia Crossing. It is scheduled for April 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the city hall auditorium. Representatives from the city and developer G.J. Grewe will be in attendance. “Residents can come up and talk with us face to face,” said Mike Hemmer, Columbia’s director of community and economic development.

St. John UCC of Valmeyer will have a trivia night on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 7 p.m. Teams should have six to eight members, and the entry fee is $10 per person. Call 939-6876.

The Fountain Creek Band will be rockin’ the Corner Pub on March 31.

Terry Eden underwent surgery today to replace a ruptured disc in his neck. His two brothers have had the same surgery three times. 

Valmeyer Postmaster Alice Wellen will work in Nashville for the next four months. Fults Postmaster Jeannie Donald will fill in for her.


Howard Heavner was honored last night for his 25 years as Valmeyer High School’s ag advisor during the school’s annual FFA Banquet. “I always wanted to make my FFA classes educational and something students enjoy attending,” said Heavner. During the evening he received many gifts and accolades, including letters from Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Rep. Dan Reitz. Also honored during the banquet were Garry and Dianne Stuckmeyer, and Hattie Doyle, who were named honorary Valmeyer FFA members. Among the many gifts he was presented last night, Heavner, left, was given a framed FFA Class of 2007 photo.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg will continue its 166-year-old tradition of Good Friday services spoken in German. It will be Friday, April 6, at 10 a.m. Rev. Darwin Schrader of Fairview Heights will be the guest preacher. Visitors of all faiths are welcome to attend. The Holy Cross Lutheran Ladies Aid Society will provide a luncheon for guests at 11 a.m. For more information call Arlene Baum at 939-8275, or the church at 939-7094.

The first morels of spring: There are reports of a single, small, grey morel mushroom picked Wednesday afternoon in the southeastern part of Monroe County. An additional four were discovered this morning in the one to two-inch range. “They were hard to spot and I was literally standing on them when they were spotted,” said the anonymous morel hunter.

Joe Goeddel, 74, of Waterloo, died March 21, from a heart condition while visiting his son, Ira, in California. Funeral arrangements are pending at Quernheim Funeral Home.
