Cynthia Ziegler’s Family Honored At Democratic Dinner

Monroe County Circuit Clerk Aaron Reitz, center, discusses the late Cynthia Ziegler with her husband, George Ziegler, and daughter Laura Blevins.

The Monroe County Democratic Central Committee held its 2007 Dinner and Auction on Thursday evening at Columbia’s Turner Hall. Guest speakers included Rep. Dan Reitz, Randolph County Circuit Clerk Barb Brown and former St. Louis Mayor Vince Schoemehl. The evening was dedicated to the memory of Cynthia Ziegler, a lifelong local democrat who died in January. Several members of her family were in attendance. Central Committee Chairman Alan Pirtle and Vice Chair Sandy Sauget were also recognized for the hard work and dedication to the local party.

Waterloo mayoral candidates Tom Smith, left, offers best wishes to opponent and current Mayor Terry Kipping, right, during last night’s Democratic dinner at Turner Hall. Looking on is Charlie Hopkins, father of Waterloo Ward II Alderman Jim Hopkins.

The talk around the town of Waterloo is Tuesday’s announcement from Alderman Jim Nagel that he would withdraw from the mayoral race. Since his announcement, Nagel has not made any additional public statements regarding the matter. Supporters have removed many of his yard signs, but his website, www.votenagel.com, does not address his decision to step out of the race. The remaining two candidates, current Mayor Terry Kipping and Alderman Tom Smith, both attended Thursday night’s Monroe County Democratic Central Committee Dinner at Turner Hall.

“It was a real shocker,” said Kipping. “I am disappointed that voters may see this as a questionable election maneuver and will suppress the overall turn out, certainly not in the best interest of our city.”

“Jim is a good man and has always done what he believed to be the best for all the people of Waterloo,” said Smith. “Once again, Mr. Nagel demonstrated his willingness to put the people’s interest first regardless of the cost to his own political career.”

Walsh’s Inn won the coveted World Championship of Kloepper Monday night at Freeda’s Bar in Renault. Gene Stumpf and Ardell Schewe were crowned king and queen for earning the individual high scores.

Emergency workers extricate Pat Roever from her car and place her into an ambulance following an accident yesterday on Bluff Road.
