A fast moving thunderstorm yesterday dumped up to an inch of rain throughout Monroe County. At the height of the storm, just after 2 p.m., Valmeyer was pelted with hail. “It was bigger than golf balls,” reported Gail McCarthy.

Crossing Issue; Board Of Commissioners Votes To Support Development An advisory referendum on the April 17 ballot will give Columbia residents the opportunity to voice their opinions on the future of commercial development in the community, though not specifically about Columbia Crossing. The Monroe County Board of Commissioners April 2 voted unanimously to support the development of Columbia Crossing. In their resolution, they acknowledged the benefits to Monroe County and southern Illinois that could result from the development, and said the infrastructure improvements will improve the public health and safety of residents of the county. They stipulated economic incentives should be negotiated for the benefit of all county residents and taxing bodies, and that eminent domain should be restricted to public purposes. Monroe Countians spotted at last night’s Cardinals baseball game included Columbia Mayor Kevin Hutchinson, Brad Riechmann, Ryan Heavner and Paula, Lauren and Mark Bundy. Jamie (Kreher from home) and Brian Smith are the proud parents of a baby girl, Kristen Riley Smith. Former Monroe County Fair Queen Jamie Lynn Alexander recently became engaged to Ryan Brown of Perryville, Mo. They are planning a June 2007 wedding. Fr. Carl Scherrer of Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia is among those to be honored April 27 with the Catholic Social Services Christian Service Award. Others to be honored include Betty Bolt of St. Michael’s in Paderborn and Patricia Hogrebe of St. James in Millstadt…Immaculate Conception Church has raised nearly $3.3 million in its Building Church campaign… Chris and Kim Walster are thankful June Valentine called 911 and woke up her husband, Kenny, last Tuesday night at when a truck caught on fire at Valentine Auto Body. The Walster’s truck had been in an accident the previous week and was sitting in the Valentine’s parking lot when it burst into flames. Kenny Valentine quickly put on a pair of shoes and moved the vehicles parked next to the Walster’s away from the fire. “Thank goodness no one was injured and Kenny’s shop was not damaged,” said Kim Walster. “We’re also grateful for the quick response by the Waterloo Fire Department.” The Waterloo VFW’s Easter egg hunt is Saturday, April 7. Registration is at 11 a.m., with the hunt beginning at 11:30 a.m. “Get their early because we will be serving cookies, milk and juice before the event,” said Post Commander Butch Sparwasser. Sparwasser and the rest of the VFW crew are also gearing up for this Friday’s big feast. Their annual Good Friday seafood buffet runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Wartburg will hold a Good Friday service spoken in German beginning at 10 a.m. A luncheon will be served immediately afterward.
Recent Obituaries Mary P. Heidenreich nee Patrey, 95, of Columbia, died March 30, 2007, in Red Bud. She was married to the late William Heidenreich for 62 years. Survivors include her children John (Brenda) Heidenreich of Columbia, Mary Ellen Heidenreich of Monroe, La., and Hoa Heidenreich of St. Louis; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren. Visitation and a funeral service were at Lawlor Funeral Home. |
