Weekend Wrap-Up - April 8, 2007

And they’re off… Children race for prizes Saturday during the Waterloo VFW Easter Egg Hunt. Despite temperatures just above the freezing mark, there was a good turnout.

Rich Dillow, Rich Lammert, Larry Gilbert and Chris Sueme cook fried fish Friday evening at the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club. Tons of fish was served throughout Monroe County on Good Friday’s. Some of the popular spots to dine were the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club, Waterloo VFW and the Valmeyer Jaycee’s fish stand at the village’s fire house.

Mayoral Candidates At Fish Fries: The two Waterloo mayoral candidates were both spotted dining on fish plates on Good Friday. Mayor Terry Kipping ate at the Waterloo VFW, while Alderman Tom Smith chose the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club.

Lucy and Jerry Engbring were joined by several of the children and grandchildren Friday night for fish at the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club.

Janet and Dennis Rippelmeyer celebrated 25 years of wedded bliss this past week. They celebrated by selling their home on North Library and buying a place on Paul Drive.

The Boehm family, Dwight, Liz, Mitch and Emma, harvested 165 morel mushrooms this weekend. They report that wearing gloves and coveralls keeps hunters warm and prevents exposure to poison ivy and ticks.

Steve Hoffmann and Dan Lutz picked so many morel mushrooms this weekend they brought in a few to JV’s Friday night and put them on top of their pizza.

Braving near freezing conditions on Friday, Bob Hoock of Waterloo picked 87 morel mushrooms.

Gedern, Germany, teacher Andreas Heuser and a contingent of students are getting ready to head to their sister city of Columbia. They will be visiting April 9 to April 29. “I’m looking forward to being in Columbia again,” writes Heuser by email. “It’ll be my eighth exchange stay.”

Taking top honors at the 2007 Burksville Tipton Area Fishing Tournament March 24 were Justin and John Schmitz. They caught 15 pounds of blue gill and crappie.
