Today's News - April 9, 2007

Tom Toenjes is scheduled to undergo back surgery today at Barnes –Jewish Hospital for injuries sustained in a collision with a train yesterday on Bluff Road just north of Chalfin Bridge. Toenjes’ children, Jordan, 15, and Zachary, 11, were treated for minor injuries and released from St. Anthony’s Hospital yesterday.

Mathews Named To Meramec College Hall of Fame: Columbia High School graduate and former Major League pitcher T.J. Mathews, 37, will be inducted into the St. Louis Community College at Meramec Hall of Fame tonight.

After pitching for Meramec, Mathews transferred to UNLV, where he pitched for two years. He was then drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1992. Mathews made his major league debut with the Cardinals in 1995, but was traded to the Oakland A’s in 1997, in a deal that brought Mark McGwire to St. Louis. Mathews was traded back to the Cardinals in 2001, but was dealt to the Houston Astros in 2002.

He has pitched in the minors leagues since then, but retired at the end of last season. His overall major league record was 32 wins, 26 losses and 16 saves.

T.J.’s father, Nelson, was an outfielder in the 1960s with the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City A’s. His older brother, Kenny, is the longtime centerfielder for the Valmeyer Lakers.

Mathews is moving back to the area with his fiancé and their infant son. He said he plans to provide youth pitching instructions.

Nelson and Joan Mathews entertained their family, including sons T.J. and Kenny and their families, for Easter at their home in Columbia.
