Gas Leak In Columbia: While drilling a hole this morning for a new water line at Darrell and Tootie May’s house on North Metter in Columbia, a plumbing company accidentally ruptured a gas line. Columbia firefighters helped Ameren / IP crews quickly repair the leak.

Consolidated Election Update

Columbia aldermanic candidates Fred Stumpf, Candace Hejna, Brad Oberkfell and incumbent Dan Row, along with current Columbia alderman Jay Unnerstall, monitor election results through the county’s reporting website last night at Our House Café.

The three Columbia school board seats were won by David Rodenberg (1,560), Lisa Mathews (1,338) and incumbent Don Shaffer (1,254). Challenger Brad Goacher’s 1,200 votes were not enough to gain a seat on the board.

Waterloo’s school board seats were filled by incumbents Sue Sweet (2,437), Dwight Schaeffer (2,166) and Kim Voelker (2,104), and newcomer Alan Horn (1,615). Losing their bids for election were Michael Klein (1,373) and Steve Frank, whose 1,792 votes topped Horn, but since he resides in the same precinct as Voelker and drew fewer votes, Horn took the seat.

Winning seats on the Valmeyer school board were Joe Andres (156), Zoe Ann Schwarze (118), Christina Nabers (113) and Ginny Rusteberg (106). Losing their bids for election were Ellen Heavner (60), Michael Gaynor (61) and Karen Schwarze (72).

Waterloo Park District voters re-elected Kevin Hahn (2,173), and write-in candidate Vern Moehrs (457) beat out fellow write-in Kim Holtgrieve (255) for the remaining seat.

The county clerk’s office reports there are 28 absentee ballots still outstanding. Voters with those ballots have until May 1 to turn them in. Of those, 14 ballots were taken out by residents of Columbia Convalescent Center. The official final election results will be released by the clerk’s office after May 1.
