Students Warned About Danger Of Drinking And Driving

Monroe County Coroner Julie Gummersheimer places a sheet over a Waterloo High School student portraying a accident victim during a mock crash demonstration yesterday at Waterloo High School.

Waterloo emergency personnel staged a mock crash yesterday to teach Waterloo High School students the dangers of drinking and driving. The demonstration was scheduled in conjunction with this weekend’s prom.

Students were selected to play the parts of people injured and killed in a two-car collision. Firefighters extricated the participants using the Jaws of Life. The “injured” students were taken away by ambulance and ARCH helicopter; the three “fatally-injured” students were pronounced dead by Monroe County Coroner Julie Gummersheimer and were taken away by representatives of Quernheim Funeral Home.

Chief Joe Brauer said the student was questioned and the claim was determined to be a hoax.

“It was a good scenario of students quickly communicating this information,” said Waterloo School Superintendent Jim Helton.

Local Band Competing In Battle Of The Bands
Alternative rock band Arythma, starring four Monroe County guys, is hoping to land a spot on the main stage at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (formerly Riverport) on May 12 for Pointfest. The band, founded in 2004, mainly plays at St. Louis venues. Band mates are Mike Wittenauer and Jarod Chiasson of Waterloo, Jordan Chiasson and Scott Klohr of Columbia and Chad Sweazea of South County.

As a promotion for Pointfest, radio station 105.7 FM is holding a battle of the bands competition to allow a local band to open up the event. Arythma was one of 245 bands who competed last year for the coveted spot. They won their semifinal round April 7 and will perform at the finals April 28 at Pop’s in Sauget.

The band has two local performances coming up: Saturday, April 21, at 8 p.m., on the second floor of The Ridge Golf Course in Waterloo; and April 25, at 3:30 p.m., at Main Street Music in Waterloo.

“We thought playing at Main Street would be a good chance for high school students to show up after class since it is right next to Waterloo High School,” said Wittenauer.

To learn more about the band, Wittenauer directs people to check out their site on the internet: www.myspace.com/arythma.
