Weekend Wrap Up - April 23, 2007 Man Seriously Injured In Rollover Accident On Hecker Highway ![]() Monroe County EMT Charlie Kujawski, right, assists Waterloo firefighters extricate a man from his vehicle in a Monday morning accident. A man was left in very serious condition following an accident early Monday morning on Route 156, just east of Waterloo. The yet-unnamed person was traveling at eastbound at 1 a.m., on Route 156, the Hecker highway (at Hartman’s curve), when he lost control of his Chevy four-door. The vehicle struck a sign, an electric pole and a tree before coming to rest on its roof. The impact caused the rear end of the vehicle to catch on fire, but was quickly put out by Doug Quernheim using a fire extinguisher. Quernheim, who was awoken by the accident, quickly called 9-1-1 and waited by the car until emergency personnel arrived. The man was trapped underneath the vehicle and needed to be extricated by Waterloo firefighters and Monroe County EMS personnel using Jaws of Life equipment. He was transported to Barnes – Jewish Hospital by Arch helicopter. His condition is not known at this time. Hankammer Rolls Car On Bluff Road ![]() Debbie Hankammer avoided serious injury Sunday morning when she lost control of her vehicle on Bluff Road, just north of old town Valmeyer. The vehicle landed on its roof, but Hankammer was able to crawl out of a window and wait for emergency personnel to arrive. She was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital for minor injuries. There was a big turnout Saturday night for a dance to benefit Cassy Diehl, third from left, who is battling cancer. ![]() Katie Valentine and Chris Singer were crowned queen and king of the Columbia High School prom. Kristin Manning and Johnny Hamilton are the royal couple of the Waterloo High School prom. A four-vehicle fender bender tied up traffic this morning on Lakeview Drive near the intersection of Park Street. There were no serious injuries. Aaron Toenjes graduated with honors from basic military training April 13 at Lackland Air Force Base. He is now stationed Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Tex. studying tech training for military intelligence. He is the son of Mary Ann Mosses-Farley and Bernie Toenjes. Twyla Luhr celebrated her 85th birthday Sunday with family and friends at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo. Luella Mueller had an open house at Turner Hall Sunday for her 90th birthday. Jim and Melanie Broshears traveled to the Windy City to root on the Cardinals during a three-game series this weekend against the Chicago Cubs. The Columbia Police Department is planning an evacuation drill Friday afternoon at Columbia High School.
Recent Obituaries Nora Mueller nee Wittenborn, 95, of Waterloo, died April 21. Survivors include son Allan (Kathy) Mueller. She was preceded in death by husband, Delbert; and sister, Bernice Wittenborn. Visitation is Wednesday, April 25, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, 9:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. |
