Nursing Home Celebrates Older Americans Month

Oak Hill, Monroe County’s nursing home, kicked-off Older American’s Month yesterday with a balloon release by the residents. Waterloo Mayor-Elect Tom Smith read a proclamation honoring the residents, volunteers and employees of the facility. “I urge the citizens of this community to honor and celebrate this special event,” said Smith.

Valmeyer Police Chief Resigns – Former Chief Re-Hired
Paul James submitted his resignation as Valmeyer police chief yesterday during the village’s board meeting. Later in the meeting former police chief Tom Andres was appointed by the board to fill the position and he accepted. He assumed the duties of police chief immediately following the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the village board was considering appointing Andres as the new chief and reassigning James to the position of a full-time patrol officer.

Tom Andres, a lifelong resident of Valmeyer, served as Valmeyer police chief for about 10 years in the 1990s through 2002. He then resigned and took a security guard job at the federal court building in St. Louis. James, a former city of St. Louis police officer who moved to Waterloo, was appointed in 2002 to fill the vacant position.

Andres left his job in St. Louis to accept the village of Valmeyer’s offer to return to the police department.

“We will hire another full-time officer, hopefully by the end of the month,” said Valmeyer Mayor Howard Heavner.

The village has also recently hired two part-time police officers.

Sweet Retires From Sheriff’s Department

Kevin Sweet retired yesterday from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. He served as a deputy and sergeant since 1985. He plans on devoting his time to his detective business, playing golf, and spending time with his wife, Sue. A reception was held in his honor yesterday at the sheriff’s department. Sweet, center, receives plaques honoring his years of service from Sheriff Dan Kelley, left, and Sergeant Dennis Schreder, representing the Fraternal Order of Police.

Don Schilling will retire Friday from Waterloo Lumber Co. after 37 years of service.
