Area seniors flocked yesterday to the annual Oak Hill Senior Jubilee at Columbia’s Turner Hall. “We had a great turnout,” said Oak Hill’s Judy Niemann, who estimated the turnout at about 350. A variety of vendors displayed their products and services that cater to seniors. Entertainment included Brian Hart of Waterloo appraising antiques, a chicken dinner and a performance by the Waterloo German Band. The Maeystown Fire Department responded last night to a report of a burning tree that was struck by lightning. When firefighters arrived on the scene they noticed it was in the middle of a muddy field. Fire Chief Lyndie Prange decided the trucks would not be able to reach the tree and the fire would not be able to spread. Firefighters returned to the engine house and let the rain take care of extinguishing the fire. There was a two-vehicle accident Friday morning on Market Street in Waterloo. Shoppers at a garage sale at Brian Hart’s home across the street witnessed the accident and reported no major injuries. Drilling for a geothermal heating and cooling unit began today at Tannous Chiropractic on Main Street in downtown Waterloo. This type of system takes advantage of stable ground temperatures to heat or cool a building with greater efficiency and less pollution than systems that run on fossil fuels. Drs. J. and Cheryl Tannous said they believe this is the first commercial building in downtown Waterloo to install this type of environmentally-friendly unit. St. Paul UCC’s Youth Group will have a trivia night tonight (Friday), beginning at 7 p.m. a the Columbia Middle School. Proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association in honor of Mr. Biscan and Mrs. Kremmel, who both recently died of heart disease. Daytime Discoveries Daycare Center of Valmeyer is planning a ribbon cutting for Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. An open house will follow until 1 p.m. The Rohlfing family said the business should be open later this month. The History Museum of Monroe County’s annual Champagne and Diamond Gala is Friday evening at Gallagher’s in downtown Waterloo. Proceeds benefit the planned museum to be located next to Bellefontaine House in Waterloo. Cari (Taake from home) Santoff will celebrate her 30th birthday this weekend. Longtime Gibault High School teacher Ann Limestall has announced she will retire at this end of this school year. The Columbia Schools Parade and Picnic is set for May 19. The SPPS of Waterloo Summer Picnic is slated for June 8 and 9. Waterloo Cub Scouts’ annual Fire Up For Scouting is Saturday, May 12, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Waterloo Fire House. The event will feature scouting displays and firefighters will provide tours of the trucks and the station. Valmeyer Boy Scout Troop 345’s Mother's Day Barbecue is Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Town Center. Zion UCC of St. Joe’s steeple and rooster needed major repairs following last July’s storm. To help pay for the repairs, the church is having a yard sale Saturday, May 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Local rock band Father Jack is quickly making its way into the St. Louis music scene. The will play at the Shamrock Pub on Saturday, May 12. The bar is located at 1131 S. Broadway in St. Louis. Maeystown Homecoming Is May 25 And 26: Maeystown Homecoming organizers are looking for parade entries. Floats; antique cars, tractors or other vehicles; bands; politicians; or just about any parade entry is welcome. Call Carla Coats at 458-5633 or Mark Bundy at 458-6930 or just show up for the parade, May 26, at 5:30 to line up at the church on top of the hill. The parade will start at 6 p.m. The second annual Maeystown Creekside Cup washer tournament will be held during the homecoming again this year. Starting time is 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, and the entry fee for each two-person team is $10. To enter a team into the tournament, call Mark Baum at 618-791-3229 or Mark Bundy at 458-6930. There will be trophies and cash prizes. The ducks will be racing again at the Maeystown Homecoming Duck Race. Starting time will be 3:30 pm on Saturday, May 26, at the old rock bridge. This event is sponsored by the Maeystown Clovers 4-H club. The cost for one duck is $2 or a family of six ducks for $10. Recent Obituaries Willard Gustav Stahl, 75, of Dupo, died May 7, 2007, in St. Louis. He was married to the late Peggy Stahl. Survivors include his brothers Nelson (Deloris) Stahl of Dupo, and Wade (Carolyn) Teeter of Columbia; two step-children; and eight step-grandchildren. Visitation is Sunday, May 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dashner Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Monday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m., at Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo. James W. Walla, 69, of Waterloo, died May 7, 2007, in St. Louis. Survivors include his wife, Edith G. Walla nee Beckham; children Tom (Susan) Walla of Columbia, Mike (Laine) Walla of O’Fallon, Mo., John (Tonya) Walla of Waterloo, Jeff Walla of Waterloo, Carol Walla of Waterloo, Lisa (Rusty) Ezzell of Prairie du Rocher, and Ron Walla of Festus, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren. Visitation and a funeral service were at Lawlor Funeral Home. Vernon D.C. Schaefer Sr., 89, of Valmeyer, died May 8, 2007, in Waterloo. He was married to the late Luella Schaefer nee Seyler. Survivors include his sister Betty (Everette) Marsten of Arlington, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son Vernon D. Schaefer Jr. Visitation is Friday, May 11, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m., at Quernheim. Emilie J. Williams nee Davit, 100, of Columbia, died May 8, 2007, in Columbia. She was married to the late Franklin Williams. Survivors include her daughter Dorothy (Gale) King of Columbia; grandchildren Jim King of Columbia, Dan King of Columbia, Nancy Cunningham of Randleman, N.C., Cynthia Williams of Ft.
