Weekend Wrap-Up - August 5, 2007 Valmeyer’s Baseball Field Renamed Luhrs Field ![]() Valmeyer Lakers Manager Dennis “Boog” Pieper, left, gathers Saturday with members of the Luhr family underneath the new electronic scoreboard at the Borsch Park baseball field in old town Valmeyer. The field was renamed yesterday in honor of Twyla and her husband, the late Alois Luhr. In addition to the scoreboard, the Luhrs donated the stadium seats which were installed a few years ago. The Valmeyer Jaycees, Optimists and Lions clubs were also recognized for their contributions to the park through the years. Pieper said the Mon-Clair baseball officials are so impressed with Valmeyer’s improved baseball field, the league will move their final-four tournament next weekend from Fairview Heights to Valmeyer.
Good Turnout At Tipton Church’s Auction And Chicken Dinner ![]() Dale and Louann Walsh look over quilts ready for auction during Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Auction and Chicken Dinner. “The turnout was great even though the temperature was a little warm,” said Sarah Sparwasser, one of the event’s organizers. “There are a lot of shade trees here and a nice breeze blew over the church grounds.” Julie Huber of Wyoming, formerly of Hecker, is heading to St. Louis in September to see a specialist at Barnes Jewish Hospital for two brain aneurysms. “I am still working, but I am having severe headaches,” said Huber. The business meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12 noon luncheon. Cynthia O'Neill, a member of the IRTA board of trustees, will be the after-lunch speaker. The Waterloo High School Class of 1967’s 30-year class reunion is scheduled for Saturday, August 18, at the Waterloo VFW. Recent Obituaries Ruth Hahn nee Yallaly, 87, of Modoc, died August 4, at her home. She was a homemaker and widow of the late Roy Hahn, who died in 1971. She was also proceeded in death by brother Adolph Boyd, Amos “Pete” Yallaly, John “Spruce” Yallaly, William “Bill” Yallaly and Fr. Jules Yallaly. Survivors include children Bobbie (Paul) Toenjes, Jeanette (Ron) Melliere, Joe Hahn, David (Debbie) Hahn and John (Kim) Hahn; brother, Thomas Yallaly; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation is Monday, August 6, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral is Tuesday, August 7, 10 a.m., at St. Leo Catholic Church in Modoc. John Mathews Sr., 61, of Prairie du Rocher, died August 3. Survivors include special loved one, Shirley Tierce; children John (Jeannie) Mathews Jr., Jane (Paul) Jackson and Jeremy (Jaime) Mathews; brothers Orval (Nancy), Dale, Clyde (Shirley), Dennis (Lynn) and David Mathews; and sister, Janet (Bill) Posey.
