Nearly 100 acres of a farm field south of downtown Waterloo burned today in a quick-moving brush fire.

The Waterloo Fire Department responded at 12:30 p.m. to a report of corn stubble field on fire on Old Red Bud Road near the intersection of Fortman Lane. Dry and windy conditions caused the fire to quickly spread, and Waterloo requested aid from several neighboring departments, including Maeystown, Columbia, Valmeyer, Hecker, Red Bud and Prairie du Pont.

An employee from the William Nobbe John Deere dealership, located a couple miles south of the fire, also responded to the scene with a tractor and a disc to help contain the blaze. Firefighters had the fire under control by 3 p.m.
