Rush Hour Accident Snarls Traffic In Columbia

A two-vehicle accident between two Waterloo residents tied up rush hour traffic this morning on the south end of Columbia. McCall Lancaster, 39, was driving a four-door Ford when she collided with a Kia SUV operated by Nicole Donnelly, 28. The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Route 3, just south of Main Street. Injuries were minor. – photo by David Walker

Noon-Time Collision At Busy Waterloo Intersection


Two cars collided at noon today at the intersection of North Market and Route 3 in Waterloo. Eddie Ticer, 77, of Valmeyer, driving a Grand Marquis collided with a Chevrolet Lumina driven by Barbara Christenson, 66, of Prairie du Rocher. Both declined medical treatment.

Applebutter Time In Maeystown


Apples were peeled today to get ready to make applebutter tomorrow morning. Coming all the way from Fairfax, Va., to partake in the event was Nancy (Altes from home) Reed. She is joined by her cousin, Sharon Sparwasser of Valmeyer, center, and her mother, Emma Altes of Waterloo. Applebutter stirrers are being requested between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday morning. Those interested are asked to arrive at the Old Rock Mill in downtown Maeystown. Food will be provided. The applebutter will be sold at the October 14 Maeystown Oktoberfest. - photo by Mark Bradley

The Red Bud Grade School Lady Royals softball team defeated Valmeyer 13-1 last Monday night to clench the regional title. The team was led by Tori Albert’s home run and the pitching of Tara Hubert. The team will next play Centralia at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Columbia Junior High School baseball team is headed for the playoffs. They will play Collinsville on Saturday afternoon in Pinckneyville.

Columbia High School senior baseball standout Trent Blank has signed a letter of intent to accept a scholarship to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Columbia’s Festifall is Sunday, September 30, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., at A.C. Metter Memorial Park. The event features food, art, jewelry and crafts. There will also be children’s games and a hayride. The Smash Band will provide musical entertainment from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The washers tournament begins at 1:30 p.m.

Celebrating birthdays this week were Joyce Krippel and Debbie Ruggeri. Krippel recently returned from a Branson vacation she enjoyed with her son, Matt.

Shannon Sizemore of Columbia has been named the new branch manager of the National City Bank in Waterloo.

Illinois Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Nalepa, will kick off his campaign October 11 at the Monroe County Republican Fall Victory dinner at The Falls in Columbia. Nalepa is a West Point graduate and served in the U.S. Army as a Captain until he left the service in 1984. He then spent 20 years in the executive search field. "Democrat leadership has made Illinois the laughing stock of the country and, in some cases, the world,” said Monroe County Republican Committee Chairman Myron Neff. “In 2008 we can send some one to Washington, DC that the citizens can be proud of, Jim Nalepa."

Recent Obituaries
David “The Ledge” Miller, 76, of Waterloo, died Sept. 27. He was the former owner of The Ornamental Iron Shop in Waterloo, member of the Southside Imperial Dance Club and St. Louis Ski Club and an avid bicyclist. Survivors include children Julie Sinn, Daniel (Anita) Miller and John (Susan) Miller; grandchildren Crystal, Danielle, Joe, Eric and Ryan, and Kelsey Sinn; sisters Claudia White and Betty Curran; and brother, Tom (Candy) Miller. He was preceded in death by wife, Betty Ann Miller nee Huebner. There was no visitation. According to Dave’s wishes, his body was donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Relatives and friends are invited to a reception Oct. 13, 3 p.m., at 209 North Library in Waterloo.

Rose Heck nee Perschbacher, 71, of Smithton, died Sept. 26. She was preceded in death by parents, Oswald ad Minnie Perschbacher; and sister, Bernice Klein. A graveside service will be Oct. 2, 10 a.m., at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Belleville.

Shirlean Faust, 77, of Columbia, died Sept. 24, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Columbia Alter Sodality, American Legion Post 581 Auxiliary, Columbia Senior Citizens and Monroe County Farm  Bureau,. She was a homemaker, retired farmer and retired Columbia school bus driver. She was preceded in death by husband, Walter Faust, who died in 1981. Survivors include son, Wayne Faust of Columbia; brother, Ron Staher; and friends Sue Welchhance, Bernice and Kathleen.

Paul Wiersch, 67, of South Carolina, formerly of Waterloo, died Sept. 18. He was raised by Paul and Agatha Muertz. He graduated from Gibault High School and was a 20-year Navy veteran. His body was cremated and there was  no visitation. Memorial made be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o DeFabio Funeral Home in Waterloo.

Humane Society of Monroe County’s Pet of the Week:

Banjo is a three-month-old Labrador / shepherd mix. He loves people, other dogs, cats and does lot of exploring. Banjo is doing great on crate training and learning about potty training. To visit Banjo, stop by the Humane Society shelter on Route 3, just north of Red Bud, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The society will also have a booth Columbia’s Festifall on Sunday.
