SS. Peter And Paul Softball And Baseball Teams Both Finish Second In State

The SS. Peter and Paul Grade School boys baseball team and girls baseball team both finished in second placed Friday in the Illinois State Class S tournament in Coulterville. In their championship game, the softball Falcons lost to Steeleville 7-6. The baseball team fell to Woodlawn 13-5. Both teams were welcomed back home with a parade through Waterloo. A plumber attempting to dig a hole for a new water pipe accidentally ruptured a gas line Tuesday morning. The incident occurred on East Schneider in Columbia’s old town neighborhood. Columbia firefighters secured the scene until an Ameren / IP employee arrived on the scene to shut off the leak.

The Red Bud Grade School Lady Royals softball team defeated Nashville to win third place in the state tournament. The win also marked the 100th victory for Coach Larry Ehlers.

Mary Anne Gibbs died yesterday following a brief battle with cancer. She passed away in her favorite room in her home surrounded by her family. Funeral arrangements are pending.  

Clayton Schneider and his family are receiving from injuries sustained in an automobile accident this weekend while traveling to Camp DuBois. Reports are everyone has been released from the hospital.

Young Bicyclist Injured On Columbia’s Main Street: Reed Juengling, 13, of Columbia is recovering following injures sustained Monday night when he was hit by a motorist. Juengling, son of Christy Garcia and Mike Juengling, was bicycling on Main Street when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Main and Whiteside. He was taken to Children’s Hospital where he is recovering from serious injuries. According to the Columbia Police Department, Juengling was riding his bicycle on the roadway when he was struck.

“His injuries would have been less severe if he would have been wearing a helmet,” said Columbia Police Chief Joe Edwards.

The name of the driver of the vehicle and the cause of the accident have not yet been released.

Earl Asselmeier, 80, of Sparta, died Oct. 7, at Sparta Community Hospital. He was the former owner of Sparta Feed and a Marine veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by parents Henry and Olinda Asselmeier of Prairie du Rocher. Survivors include wife, Ruby (Ritter) Asselmeier; daughter, Leisa Asselmeier; sons Eric (Shelby) and Craig (Jim) Asselmeier; Paul Asselmeier of Waterloo; and sister, Ferrell “Cookie” Tunze. Visitation is Tuesday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Sparta. Funeral Wednesday, 10 a.m.

Pearl "Patsy" Mueller, 76, of St. Louis, Mo., died Oct. 7. She was preceded in death by brothers Nelson and Clyde Mueller. Survivors include sisters Helen Bricker and Bernice (Harold) Meyer; and brother Ray (Verneil) Mueller of Red Bud. A graveside service will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, 9 a.m., at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service will be at a later date.

Donna Bagsby, 75, of Millstadt, died Oct. 6, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She was a retired ward clerk at St. Elizabeth's. Survivors include her husband, Tom Bagsby; daughters Karen Witte and Janet Bagsby; sons Larry, Gary and Tim Bagsby; brothers Raymond and Joseph Kunkle; grandchildren Emma Bagsby, Kaitlin Witte and Kyle Witte; and sisters-in-law Louise Williams of Waterloo and Patricia Armstrong. Funeral arrangements were made by Creason Funeral Home in Millstadt.

Lawrence "Larry" Doiron, 63, of Millstadt; died Oct. 7, at his home. He was a retired master sergeant with the Illinois State Police. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of the Prairie du Rocher American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Josephine (DeClos) Doiron; brother, Jerry Doiron; son, Michael Doiron. Survivors include wife, Mary Ellen (Lemmerman) Doiron; daughter, Laura (Edward) Clark; son, Mark (Krista) Doiron; grandsons Jared and Adam Clark; brothers, Gene (Susan) and Raymond (Claradel) Doiron; and sisters Doris Kloepper and Carl (Larry) Durbin. Visitation is Wednesday, Oct. 10, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Creason Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral is Oct. 11, 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
