Republicans Gather For Dinner At The Falls

The Monroe County Republican Fall Dinner was Thursday evening at The Falls in Columbia. Local, state and federal candidates discussed current issues. County Republican office holders in attendance included Julie Gummersheimer, coroner; Merrill Prange, treasurer; Dennis Knobloch, clerk; and Dale Haudrich, commissioner. Former commissioner Frank Kohler announced he would challenge Dale Haudrich in next year’s primary election. During its work at the entrances and exits to the new Waterloo Schnucks, the Illinois Department of Transportation will have lane closures on the north end of Waterloo. In the coming weeks, roads affected include Illinois Route 3 between Moore Street and North Market Street and North Market Street between Plaza Drive and Illinois Route 3. Construction activities are anticipated to be completed by December 10, 2007. Traffic control devices will be utilized throughout the project to assist motorists making their way through the work zone.

Community members interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer in disaster responses are invited to join the Community Emergency Response Team. An informational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m., at the Millstadt Community Center, 102 S. Jefferson. Emergency Management Agencies of Monroe and St. Clair Counties will conduct training courses Nov. 2, Nov. 3 and Nov. 10. For more information, visit the website: http://co.st-clair.il.us/. The Waterloo Lions Club will be collecting donations at intersections on Friday and Saturday. Participating in Candy Day Friday morning in downtown Waterloo are Lions, left to right, Lyle Wessel, Fred Meister, Don Armbrecht, George Obernagel and Ken Jackson.

The Gibault Hawks boys’ golf team won the West Frankfurt Sectional Tournament to advance the team to the Illinois Class A State Tournament.

Auditions for Monroe Actors Stage Company’s production of Ghost Of A Chance are Nov. 13 and 14, 7 p.m., at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Waterloo. For more information, visit the website: www.masctheatre.org. “The Curious Savage” is the next play scheduled for the Monroe Actors Stage Company. Performances are Nov. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for senior citizens and students.

The traveling exhibit “Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries” will be on display November 6 through 30 at the Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo. The exhibit was developed based on information and images collected by Eastern Illinois University’s Boothe Library. An opening reception for the exhibit is Nov. 6, at 6:45 p.m. Libby Reuter, curator and director of Southwestern Illinois College’s Schmidt Art Center, will speak on “How To Look At Art and Architecture.”

Additional events during the exhibit include Michelle Posey’s Christmas Craft program on Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. Family Read Night is Nov. 15, 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Rebecca Hunter will discuss Sears Houses on Nov. 27, at 7 p.m.

A Halloween candy checkpoint will be at the Waterloo Fire House on Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Monroe County EMS, Waterloo Fire Department, Waterloo Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff Department.

Tennis Teams Competing In Sectional Tournament


Waterloo High School tennis standout Hannah Quernheim serves in a match this week against Mascoutah. WHS, along with Gibault, will compete this weekend in the sectional tournament at Belleville West. Gibault girls’ tennis team ended their inaugural regular season with a home victory over Metro East Lutheran. The Hawks finished the season with a 3-10 record. Gaining victories for GHS were singles players Danielle Spezia, Sam Naumann and Kate Ramlose. Doubles winners were Jenny Lesko and Danielle Spezia and Maria Lesko and Hannah Lundy.

Red Bud High School’s football field will be the place to be Friday night as Red Bud takes on Columbia. Both team come into the game with unbeaten, 7-0 records. Several thousand spectators are expected to be in attendance for the match-up which kicks off at 7 p.m.

Mayors Put Dough On The Line: Columbia Mayor Kevin Hutchinson and Red Bud Mayor Ken Mueller have made a friendly bet regarding the outcome of Friday night’s high school football game. With both teams having records of 7-0, the mayors have agreed to wager a dozen doughnuts on the outcome. If the Red Bud Musketeers are victorious, Hutchinson will delivery doughnuts to Mueller at Red Bud City Hall. If the Columbia Eagles win the game, Mueller has agreed to bring doughnuts to Columbia City Hall.

“This is a great way to have a little fun and show support and sportsmanship between the communities,” said Hutchinson.

Recent Obituaries
Edna Klein nee Wuertz, 89, of Waterloo, died Oct. 11, in St. Louis. Survivors include children, Henry Klein Jr. and Linda (George) Foster; sisters Theresa Bumstead, Jean Holtz and Marie Pratt; and brothers Richard and Daniel Wuertz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Klein Sr., and son, James Klein. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
