Columbia Defeats Red Bud To Take Football Conference Championship

Columbia High School football players celebrate Friday night’s victory over Red Bud.

In the battle of gridiron unbeatens, the Columbia Eagles were able to hold off a fourth quarter surge by the Red Bud Musketeers to sustain a 28-22 victory. The win propels the Eagles to a record of 8-0 and their first Cahokia Conference championship since 2003. Red Bud fell to 7-1, to finish in second place. The Red Bud field was lined with more than 2,000 fans, the biggest crowd in school history. With the grandstands overflowing, spectators lined both end zones and some stood on the top of RV’s and firetrucks to witness the action

“This is great turnout and everyone is showing good sportsmanship,” said Ron Langhans, a member of the Columbia School Board.

CHS was led by running back John Heineken, who rushed for 177 yards on 34 carries. Gaining nearly 100 yards on the ground and scoring two touchdowns in the first half, he also picked off a pass while playing defense.

“John has the fullback mentality with the moves of a tailback,” said Columbia Coach Scott Horner.

While Columbia quarterback Tyler Truttmann threw a few interceptions, Horner was quick to point out how he was able to put those errors aside and throw big completions when the game was on the line.

“Our offensive linemen also deserve a lot of the credit for this win,” said Horner, who pointed out the steady play of linemen Jeff Moallenkamp, Chris Coulter, Phil Stoecker and Joel Greatting.

The Eagles led at the half by a score of 14-0 and went ahead 21-0 in the third quarter. The Red Bud offense came to life in the fourth quarter with two quick touchdowns following long completions by quarterback Bob Hoffman. Scoring for the Musketeers were Tim Conway, who caught a one-yard pass, and Matt Mehring ran the ball in from the five yard line.

Following a failed on-side kick by Red Bud, with less than three minutes to go in the game Columbia quarterback Tyler Truttmann threw a 20-yard pass to wide receiver Brian Winters, who was able to elude Red Bud defensive backs and sprinted into the end zone for a 50-yard TD. Following the ensuing kick-off, it only took the Musketeers a few plays to find themselves on the Eagles’ one-yard line. On a keeper, Hoffman crossed the goal line. After a successful two-point conversion, the Eagles lead was cut to 28-22 with just over one minute left in regulation.

But again, the Eagles were able to recover an on-side kick. With no time outs remaining for Red Bud, the Eagles were able to take a knee and run out the clock. As the game ended Columbia students rushed onto the field and celebrate with the team.

Columbia finishes the season next week with a non-conference away game at Mascoutah. Red Bud will host Sparta in a non-conference game next Friday night.
