Mary Weber of Waterloo was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on I-255, reports KTRS 550 AM.

Weber, 46, was driving a Nissan Altima southbound on I-255 in Madison County when she was struck near the Collinsville Road exit by another Altima driven by Lindsey James, 20, of Bethalto. Weber sustained serious, but non-threatening injuries. She is recovering at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

According to the Illinois State Police report, James was traveling northbound on I-255 when her car was sideswiped by a car driven by Sharon Tripp, 51, of Memphis, Tenn. Tripp’s car came to rest against a guard rail. James’ car went through the grass median and into oncoming traffic where it collided with Weber’s car.

“Weber found herself in no man’s land and there was no way for her to avoid the collision,” said ISP Trooper James Vest.

Weber’s Altima slammed into the passenger side of James’ vehicle causing it to catch on fire. James was pulled from her vehicle, but later died at a hospital from her injuries. Tripp was ticketed for improper lane usage.

A fender bender between a truck and a car Friday tied up morning rush-hour traffic in Columbia. According to the Columbia Police Department, Megan Haeffele, 18, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 truck on Admiral Parkway. At the intersection of Bottom Avenue she rear-ended a Durham school bus driven by Wanda Cleveland, 53. The bus was carrying three students from the Waterloo School District. There were no injuries. Haeffele was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

A memorial tree will be planted on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 12:15 p.m., at Borsch Park in old town Valmeyer in memory of long-time Valmeyer-area resident Vernon Schaefer, who died earlier this year. In 2000, Vernon permanently preserved 134 acres of his bluff land and dedicated it to his late wife, Luella. He owned nearly untouched natural lands on the south side of Rt. 156, near old town. It is part of the larger bluffs ecosystem that also includes the Salt Lick Point Reserve.
