Gregson Plays In Golf Tournament Near California
Wildfires Mitchell Gregson of Waterloo and his golf teammates from Kansas State University competed in a tournament earlier this week only eight miles from one of the California wildfires. The Club Glove Intercollegiate was played Monday and Tuesday at Somis Country Club, just north of Los Angeles. Gregson said the wind was strong and the air was filled with smoke. The team finished in seventh place and is competing next week at a tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Gregson, a WHS graduate and current sophomore at Kansas State, is the son of Gordon and Cindy Gregson.
Columbia Tops Gibault For Regional Title Columbia High School defeated Gibault Thursday night to win the Class 2A Regional Championship in Columbia. The Eagles were led by Anna Eytchinson who had eight kills. Columbia (23-9) will play Wesclin (19-7) next Thursday in the sectional tournament in Nashville.
Valmeyer Wins Class 1A Regional Title by Dennis Knobloch Fire truck sirens screamed and car horns honked Thursday night as celebrants paraded through Valmeyer. The town was excited for the high school girls’ volleyball team capturing the Class 1A Regional Volleyball Regional Championship on their home court. Last night the First Mates defeated New Athens in the semi-final game and Steeleville in the championship to take home the trophy. Valmeyer will challenge Nokomis High School on Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Trico Sectional. Gibault defeated Columbia 2 -1 Monday at Oerter Park to win the Class A Boys Soccer Sectional. The Hawks were led by CBC transfer Justin Billmeyer, who scored both goals. Erik Roediger kicked in the loan Eagles’ goal. In the state tournament semi-final game Friday at 6 p.m. in Naperville, Gibault will play Manteno. Gibault has won the Class A State Tournament the past two seasons.
Mary Weber of Waterloo was seriously injured in a
multi-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on I-255,
reports KTRS 550 AM. According to the Illinois State Police report, James was traveling northbound on I-255 when her car was sideswiped by a car driven by Sharon Tripp, 51, of Memphis, Tenn. Tripp’s car came to rest against a guard rail. James’ car went through the grass median and into oncoming traffic where it collided with Weber’s car. “Weber found herself in no man’s land and there was no way for her to avoid the collision,” said ISP Trooper James Vest. Weber’s Altima slammed into the passenger side of James’ vehicle causing it to catch on fire. James was pulled from her vehicle, but later died at a hospital from her injuries. Tripp was ticketed for improper lane usage. A fender bender between a truck and a car Friday tied up morning rush-hour traffic in Columbia. According to the Columbia Police Department, Megan Haeffele, 18, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 truck on Admiral Parkway. At the intersection of Bottom Avenue she rear-ended a Durham school bus driven by Wanda Cleveland, 53. The bus was carrying three students from the Waterloo School District. There were no injuries. Haeffele was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Columbia's annual Halloween Hi-Jinks is Saturday, Oct. 27. Children can trick-or-treat at participating merchants from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sign up for the costume contest is at noon at the ICS parking lot with judging concluding at 12:30 p.m. A costume parade will proceed down Main Street at 1 p.m. A memorial tree will be planted on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 12:15 p.m., at Borsch Park in old town Valmeyer in memory of long-time Valmeyer-area resident Vernon Schaefer, who died earlier this year. In 2000, Vernon permanently preserved 134 acres of his bluff land and dedicated it to his late wife, Luella. He owned nearly untouched natural lands on the south side of Rt. 156, near old town. It is part of the larger bluffs ecosystem that also includes the Salt Lick Point Reserve. The Salt Lick Point Trail will be dedicated by the Valmeyer Boy Scouts on Sunday at 1p.m. Refreshments and a guided tour of the trail will follow.

Those who know this person have been asked to call him and wish him a happy birthday, since he may not make another 50 years.
Recent Obituaries Gladys “Bounce” Oestreich nee Kipping, 79, of Waterloo, died Oct. 23. She was preceded in death by husband Ray “Ace” Oestreich; brother, Stanley Kipping; and sister-in-law, Anna Mae Kipping nee Buttons. Survivors include daughter, Teresa (Danny) Sellers; sisters Gloria (Leo) Thoma and Greg (Ted) Mitan; and brothers Spencer (Ellen), Stanford (Patricia) and Steve (Carol) Kipping. She was a charter member and past president of the Waterloo VFW Ladies Auxiliary #6504 of Waterloo. Funeral was Friday morning at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Waterloo. Merrill Huch, 79, of Millstadt, formerly of Columbia, died Oct. 24, at Garden Place in Millstadt. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 520 of Granite City. He is survived by wife, Betty Huch; sons Mike Huch and Pat (Susan) Huch; daughters, Jeanne (Denny) Diehl, Kay (Fred) Hefflinger, and Cindy (Wade) Morgan; and sister, Marion (Louis) Karr. He was preceded in death by sons Gregory and Eric Huch. A memorial service was Friday morning at Hope Christian Church. John Stoffel Sr., 79, of Dupo, died Oct. 24, at his residence. He was a retired Union Pacific carman. He was preceded in death by wife, Marian Stoffel; son, James Stoffel; brothers Robert, Russell and Perry Stoffel; sister, Eunice Nelson. Survivors include children John (Cathy) Stoffel Jr., Diane Stoffel, Denise (Gary) Huffmann, Joyce (Randy) Williams and Patricia (Donald) Ruess; sisters Mildred Gould, Connie Gillison and Pearl (Robert) Overton; and brothers, Amil (Barbara) Stoffel and Rev. Virgil (Sheryl) Stoffel. Visitation is Friday, October 26, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral is Saturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m., at the funeral home. Geneva “Geb” Harvell nee Wilson, 82, of Tamms, died Oct. 25, at St. Anthony’s Hospital. She was a homemaker, and member of the Dupo VFW Post 6368 Ladies Auxiliary and Sandy Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Harvell; and sisters Brenda Wilson and Dimple Honey. Survivors include daughter, Diann Kuni; and son, Jay (Gail) Harvell; sisters Virginia Goddard, Patsy Brown, Laverne Thompson and Audrey Hillard; and aunt, Winifred “Winnie” Hughes.
