Sports Update - October 27, 2007

The Gibault High School soccer team defeated Winnebago High School 4-3 to win their third straight state soccer championship. The game was decided by penalty kicks following four overtime periods.

“We won the championship, again!” said Vern Kovarik, a Gibault alumnus while attending a function at The Ridge in Waterloo. He received the news via cell phone from his wife, Sevgi, who is employed at Gibault and was attending the game in Naperville.

The team will be welcomed home with a parade Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in downtown Waterloo. A pep rally will follow at the high school gym.

The Columbia girls cross country team placed second at the Class A Edwardsville sectional. They are the first CHS team in school history to qualify for the state championship in Peoria. The team includes Carly Evans, eighth and All-Section; Torey Byrd, 13th; Taylor Byrd, 17th; Ashley Hrdlicka, 27th; Sarah Butler 28th; Chelsea Hagan, 32nd; and Sam Slater, 41st.

Gibault To Play For State Soccer Championship
Gibault will try and win their third-straight state soccer championships in a game this evening at 7 p.m. Earlier today they beat Rochester 4-0 to advance to the championship game against Winnebago. Gibault defeated Winnebago last year in a semi-final game in the state tournament.

“There have been some very exciting games,” reports Gibault alumnus Patti Bauer.

Won or lose, there will be a parade through Waterloo on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. A pep rally will follow at the high school gym.

Columbia And Red Bud Win First-Round Games
In today’s high school playoff football games, Columbia easily defeated Fairfield by the score of 50-22 and Red Bud beat Macon 13 - 0. Their opponents for next week’s games will be announced later today.

CHS wide receiver Brandon Prior dives in for a second-half touchdown.

Late in the second half, Red Bud defensive back Chance Albertson, #8, cuts off the angle to the goal line and makes a tackle to prevent a Macon touchdown. The Musketeers defense then held tight and stopped four consecutive goal line rushes by Macon. The Musketeers took over on downs and ran out the clock to go into half-time with a 7-0 lead.
