E-Newsletter - November 9, 2007 ![]() United States flags will be flying in downtown Waterloo this weekend in honor of Veteran’s Day. Those responsible for the flags include the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimists, VFW, Odd Fellows, Masons, Kaskaskia Trial Chorus and the American Legion. Columbia’s Avenue of Flags will also be on display.
Veterans Day Activities The Columbia American Legion Post 581 will observe Veterans Day on Nov. 12. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. The guess speaker is Gary W. Boo, a retired navy Commander, who resides in Columbia. Ellard Rieso will also be recognized for 50 years of service to the post. Waterloo Woman Allegedly Spits On Police Officer
Following Bar Brawl Sherrie Ford of Dupo turned in the low bid and has been awarded the contract for the Monroe County Dump Site. She will take over the services beginning December 1. Reliable Sanitation of Waterloo will handle the duties at the Recycling Center. The Fountain Creek Band is gearing up for their big performance Saturday, Nov. 10 at Tiny’s. Ss. Peter and Paul’s Monsignor Flach has been transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s intensive care unit. He is currently being examined by a neurologist who specializes in Gullain-Barre syndrome, which is believed to be afflicting Flach. Elliot Newcom is celebrating his 12th birthday on Friday. He is the son of Tari and Buddy Hoefft of Waterloo and Andrew Newcom and Margo Sutter of Fults. Grandparents are Jack and Pat Vaseska and Dick and Anna Bunton of Columbia. Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo will have a family reading night on Nov. 15, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Area Scouts will place bags on door handles on Nov. 10, in preparation of food drive. Those wishing to donate are asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and place the bags in the front of their homes on Nov. 17. All food will be donated to local food pantries. Hope Christian Church is again launching a Thanksgiving and Christmas charity programs to assist those in need in Monroe County. The food pantry provides groceries to the area’s less fortunate for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Food or cash donations can be dropped off at the church, located at 9273 Coach Stop Road, between Columbia and Waterloo. For additional information call 939-9089. The church’s Operation Hope provides Christmas toys and clothing to local children. Contact the church to find out more about adopting a child. Gibault High School student Kaitlin Fahy placed first chair overall in the all-district band. She also has been recognized as the best high school clarinetist in southern Illinois. In addition, Fahy will represent Gibault at the all-state band festival in January.

Recent Obituaries Wanda Koen nee Sedovic, 70, of Waterloo, died Nov. 5. She was preceded in death by husband, Glendon Ray Koen. Survivors include children Gary Koen, Sandy (Bob) Hoock and Sandy Snyder; brothers Ronald (Ruth Ann) Sedovic and John (Roberta) Sedovic. Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 8, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m., at Quernheims. Monica Buxton nee Smith, 63, of Dupo, died Nov. 5, at Oak Hill. She worked at the Waterloo Schnuck's for 19 years. Survivors include husband, Roger Buxton; daughters Toni (John) Fuller, Candice (Anthony) Tate and Teresa (Glen) Villani; and sisters Maria (Ron) Kenneady, Carmen Diaz and Rafael Smith Colon. Visitation is Saturday, Nov. 10, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral will follow. |
