United States flags will be flying in downtown Waterloo this weekend in honor of Veteran’s Day. Those responsible for the flags include the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimists, VFW, Odd Fellows, Masons, Kaskaskia Trial Chorus and the American Legion. Columbia’s Avenue of Flags will also be on display.

Veterans Day Activities
The Waterloo VFW Post 6504 will honor Veterans Day with a program on Sunday, Nov. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. Red Bud’s ceremony will be Sunday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m., at the city park.

The Columbia American Legion Post 581 will observe Veterans Day on Nov. 12. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. The guess speaker is Gary W. Boo, a retired navy Commander, who resides in Columbia. Ellard Rieso will also be recognized for 50 years of service to the post.

Saturday’s High School Football Playoff Pairings: Red Bud (10-1) at Casey (11-0). Columbia (10-1) at Carterville (11-0).

Vandals Burn Roadside Couches


City of Columbia employee Marty Eschmann cleans up the remains of two couches that burned earlier this week. The Columbia Volunteer Fire Department was called to the intersection of Centreville Road and Ferkel Street to put out the blaze. There were no suspects at the scene when the police arrived. The couches had been set out for the taking by a resident of a nearby trailer park.

Waterloo Woman Allegedly Spits On Police Officer Following Bar Brawl
Lindsey Malady has been charged with aggravated battery after spitting on a Waterloo police officer following an altercation at a watering hole. According to the police report, Malady, 21, was at O’Shady Grove on Moore Street in Waterloo Thursday evening. Around 9 p.m. she became involved in a heated argument with another patron. As tensions grew, a beer bottle was hurled through a window. When police officers arrived on the scene, bar patrons were standing outside and pointing in the direction of a nearby apartment. Lieutenant Dave Loless approached Malady, who was sitting down and holding several sweatshirts. He asked if she was just involved in an altercation across the street. Malady proceeded to yell several expletives before asking to be arrested and taken to jail. While she was being escorted to the back of a squad car, Loless said she turned her head and spit on his face. Malady was taken to the Monroe County Jail where she spent the night. She appeared before Judge Dennis Doyle Friday afternoon and pleaded innocent to the charges. Her bond was set at $1,000.  She was released and is waiting her upcoming trial.

Sherrie Ford of Dupo turned in the low bid and has been awarded the contract for the Monroe County Dump Site. She will take over the services beginning December 1. Reliable Sanitation of Waterloo will handle the duties at the Recycling Center.

The Fountain Creek Band is gearing up for their big performance Saturday, Nov. 10 at Tiny’s.

Ss. Peter and Paul’s Monsignor Flach has been transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s intensive care unit. He is currently being examined by a neurologist who specializes in Gullain-Barre syndrome, which is believed to be afflicting Flach.

Elliot Newcom is celebrating his 12th birthday on Friday. He is the son of Tari and Buddy Hoefft of Waterloo and Andrew Newcom and Margo Sutter of Fults. Grandparents are Jack and Pat Vaseska and Dick and Anna Bunton of Columbia.

Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo will have a family reading night on Nov. 15, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Area Scouts will place bags on door handles on Nov. 10, in preparation of food drive. Those wishing to donate are asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and place the bags in the front of their homes on Nov. 17. All food will be donated to local food pantries.

Hope Christian Church is again launching a Thanksgiving and Christmas charity programs to assist those in need in Monroe County. The food pantry provides groceries to the area’s less fortunate for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Food or cash donations can be dropped off at the church, located at 9273 Coach Stop Road, between Columbia and Waterloo. For additional information call 939-9089. The church’s Operation Hope provides Christmas toys and clothing to local children. Contact the church to find out more about adopting a child.

Gibault High School student Kaitlin Fahy placed first chair overall in the all-district band. She also has been recognized as the best high school clarinetist in southern Illinois. In addition, Fahy will represent Gibault at the all-state band festival in January.

Recent Obituaries
Doris Marie Muskopf nee Bagley, 81, of Dupo. Died Nov. 7, at her residence. She was the former owner of the Cahokia Dairy Queen and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in East Carondelet. She was preceded in death by husband, Dallas Muskopf; daughter, Diane Krekel; infant son Dallas; and sister, Mildred "Mim" Daab. Survivors include son, Don (Chris) Muskopf; and daughter, Donna (Jim) Munden. Visitation is Friday, Nov. 9, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. Funeral is Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in East Carondelet.

Wanda Koen nee Sedovic, 70, of Waterloo, died Nov. 5. She was preceded in death by husband, Glendon Ray Koen. Survivors include children Gary Koen, Sandy (Bob) Hoock and Sandy Snyder; brothers Ronald (Ruth Ann) Sedovic and John (Roberta) Sedovic. Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 8, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m., at Quernheims.

Monica Buxton nee Smith, 63, of Dupo, died Nov. 5, at Oak Hill. She worked at the Waterloo Schnuck's for 19 years. Survivors include husband, Roger Buxton; daughters Toni (John) Fuller, Candice (Anthony) Tate and Teresa (Glen) Villani; and sisters Maria (Ron) Kenneady, Carmen Diaz and Rafael Smith Colon. Visitation is Saturday, Nov. 10, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral will follow.
