Weekend Wrap-Up - November 11, 2007

Knife Used In Saturday Night Bar Fight

Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Butch Ford watches over the handcuffed Matt Angarita, who is a suspect in the Saturday night fight at Bobeck’s.

A fight involving a knife disrupted an otherwise pleasant evening last night at Waterloo’s popular sports bar, Bobeck’s. At approximately 12:15 a.m., a 911 call was made to report a fight at the bar and several individuals were bleeding. Police officers from Waterloo, Columbia and county deputies quickly arrived on the scene and handled the situation.

According to witnesses, Matt Angarita and Ryan Novack had an argument. As Novack walked away he was allegedly stabbed in the back several times by Angarita. Bar patrons, including Jeff Zarzeck, Ryan Ebeler and Eric Eichner, separated the individuals and held them apart until the police officers arrived on the scene. Ebeler was cut in the arm and required stitches. Novack was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital where he remains recovering from the wounds, including an injured lung.

Angarita was arrested and taken into custody by the Waterloo Police Department. Waterloo Police Chief Jim Trantham said he is looking over the reports filed last night by the officers, but no additional information is being released at this time.

The establishment’s owner, Bob Cox, said he greatly appreciated the quick work of the patrons and the police officers. “We had the situation under control in a couple minutes,” said Cox. “In the 3 ½ years me and my wife have ran this place, we have never had any type of serious altercation.” Cox added he does not believe the person had ever been in Bobeck’s before and may have been looking to confront Novack because of a prior incident.

Missourians Arrested On Weapons Charges Following Route 3 Traffic Stop

Waterloo Police Officer Dave Midkiff, right, checks on the condition of three men handcuffed early Sunday morning following a traffic stop on Route 3.

Three loaded guns were discovered in a vehicle Sunday morning during a traffic stop near the intersection of Route 3 and North Market in Waterloo. According to the initial report, an Illinois State Police officer was working with Steve Wheat, of Wheat’s Towing, to remove a truck from the edge of the highway following a DUI arrest. Traffic was stopped as the truck was hooked to the tow truck. When County Deputy Jim Lansing walked to the scene, a person in a car reported the people in the Ford Explorer with Missouri plates parked behind them were brandishing guns. Additional officers quickly rushed to the scene and assisted Lansing and the state officer remove the three individuals and handcuffed them.

“They had a semi-automatic rifle and two Smith and Wesson pistols,” said Waterloo Police Sgt. Jay Sawyer.

The men were transported to the Monroe County Jail. Charges are pending. Their names have not been released.
