Columbia Middle School Basketball Player/Manager
To Be Featured Tonight On Channel 5 Columbia Middle School eighth grader Zach Dailey, who suffers from autism, played in his first middle school basketball game last month, and his accomplishment will be featured tonight by Mike Bush on Channel 5 during the 10 p.m. broadcast. “His lifelong dream has been to play basketball,” said CMS Principal Dr. Roger Chamberlain. “[CMS basketball coach] Jon Wehrenberg recruited him to be a manager so he could be a part of the team.” But during the team’s Oct. 29 game against Marissa, Zach made it from the sidelines to the hardwood. He was announced as a member of the starting lineup and played about the first minute of the game, Chamberlain said. A player on the Marissa team who has been battling cancer also made his comeback during the game. “It was really neat to see how the players on both teams really rallied around the boys,” Chamberlain said. He estimated about 500 people attended the game, which CMS won. “The crowd went crazy when Zach scored a basket,” said CMS parent Debbie Roediger, who was in attendance. SUV Rolls Over On Bluffside Road Two Missouri men avoided serious injury when they were involved in a rollover accident Monday afternoon. Kevin Pruitt, 23, of St. Louis, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Bluffside Road north of Columbia. Pruitt apparently lost control of the vehicle on a rain-slicked curve, hitting an embankment and a ditch then rolling over, according to the police report. It came to rest on its roof in the middle of Bluffside Road. Both Pruitt and his passenger, David Doyle of Barnhardt, Mo., were able to exit the vehicle on their own. They were treated on the scene for minor injuries by Columbia emergency medical personnel. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from IDOT, the Columbia Police Department will conduct additional safety patrols for the next year. The program runs from November 2007 through October 2008. The first part of the grant provides the funding for seat belt safety patrols from November 12 through November 25. The police officers will concentrate their enforcement efforts on the Admiral Parkway corridor, where a majority of the serious traffic crashes occur at or near the intersections, said Columbia Deputy Chief of Police Jerry Paul. “Our goal is to reduce all types of traffic crashes with increased enforcement of occupant restraint, impaired driving and enforcement of speed laws, making the roadways safer for all of our citizens and anyone traveling through the state of Illinois,” Paul said.
