The first shotgun deer hunting season kicked off this weekend with numerous hunters heading out into the woods hoping to catch the big one. One of the top deer harvested in Monroe County is reported to be Carl Vogt’s 219-pound, 14-point buck.

“It was shot in the woods at an undisclosed location in Monroe County,” said Mark Vogt, one of Carl’s sons.

John Niebruegge’s 205-pound buck is atop the leader board at Eschy’s and Fountain Inn. The biggest doe at Fountain Inn was brought in by Calvin Eckert, at 130-pounds. Corey Vogt’s 100-pound doe is tops at Eschy’s.

“These two weights may lead all the way through the second deer season,” said Fountain Inn owner Jeanette McClellan.

In Randolph County, there were more than 220 deer checked in at the Red Bud Deer Fest. Tyler Lynch had the top buck at 224 pounds. Julie Imming’s 130-pound doe was tops in that class.

The second firearm season is Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

“We’ll be open and ready at Eschy’s for the second deer season,” said Maribeth Eschmann.
