Columbia Football Headed To Champaign To Play For State Title
Football fans are gearing up for Friday’s big 3A state championship game. The Eagles will play Plano High School at 4 p.m., at Memorial Field in Champaign.

The Corner Pub is gearing up for Thanksgiving with all-you-can-eat turkey dinner today. Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Rock band Moe Cash will provide musical entertainment from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Other pre-Thanksgiving entertainment tonight includes rock bands Uncle Dick at the Waterloo VFW, Father Jack at Tiny’s and Aftershock at Bobeck’s.

Schnuck’s grocery store in Waterloo was busy last night with customers picking up items for Thursday’s Thanksgiving meals. Among those spotted pushing carts were John “Hey Cat” Pottoff and Patti Bieber. Pottoff offered Bieber some cooking recommendations. When Chip Bieber (Patti’s husband) visited The Independent office on Wednesday, he was not sure what the cooking recommendations were, but he did notice a ham in their refrigerator. “We’re heading to my sister-in-laws for dinner tomorrow,” reported Chip.

The Columbia Kiwanis Club and Dr. Cangas’ Helmets First program are teaming up for a Breakfast With Santa Claus. It will be Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at Columbia’s Old Middle School. Santa will be available for photos. Entertainment includes bounce games, crafts and movies. Door prizes are toys, bikes and tickets to Illini, Mizzou and SLU basketball games.

Santa is coming to Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo on Saturday, December 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Come hear Mrs. Clause read you a story while you wait for a turn to get your picture taken with Santa. Pictures cost $5 each.

Vogts Donate Trees To Oak Hill

Jay and Judy Vogt of rural Waterloo donated 32 trees to Oak Hill Nursing Home. The trees were uprooted yesterday and transported on several flatbed trailers by County Commissioners Terry Liefer, left, Dale Haudrich, right, and Delbert Wittenauer.

In other Oak Hill news, Kathy Goodman was honored today as the 13th annual recipient of the Wessel-Pistor Award, the nursing home’s top honor for an employee.

Valmeyer Volleyball Team Honored For Successful Season

Valmeyer Mayor Howard Heavner read a proclamation today declaring Nov. 18 through Nov. 24 as Valmeyer First Mates Volleyball Team Week. Heavner and village board trustees honored the coaches and players in an assembly today in the school’s gym for their regional volleyball championship.

"I'm so very proud of them,” said Head Coach Mary McCarthy Neff. “They did a great job; they worked really hard. I'm looking forward to next season."

"It is fun to recognize success. It is one of my more fun jobs as mayor," added Heavner.

Recent Obituaries
Dr. George Siemers, 81 years old, died November 18 at The Bridges nursing facility in Columbia, IL.  He was an obstetrician who delivered over 3000 babies at three area hospitals. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janet Miller Siemers. He is survived by their six children: George “Skip” (Noranne) Siemers; Louise (Bob) Kenny; Steven (Susan) Siemers; Judy (Bob) Guasco; Ginny (Doug) Larson; and Ed (Dr. Lori Trost) Siemers; and 14 grandchildren.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Old Cathedral on Saturday at 10am.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Eva Marie Sullivan nee Price, 81, of Dupo, died Nov. 19, at her residence. She was a retired home economics teacher in the Dupo Community School District. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Sullivan; sister, Doris Price; and a brother, Olen Price. Survivors include brother, Nathan (Mary) Price. Visitation is Wednesday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Dashner Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral will follow.
