David Maurer is recovering at his home after his head was grazed by a bullet fired during an incident Monday night inside his home in Sterritt's Run, according to Waterloo Police Chief Jim Trantham. The bullet grazed Maurer’s head and he was taken by Monroe County Ambulance Service to an area hospital. At 11:56 p.m., the emergency dispatcher received a call from the Maurer residence at 110 Sterritt's Run, an upscale Waterloo subdivision north of town, reporting intruders had entered the home and one of them fired a weapon at the homeowner. The suspects then reportedly fled in a black car.

“The suspects are known by the victim and the incident is not a random act,” Trantham said.

The Waterloo Police Department continues to question the two suspects but have not released their names, according to Trantham.

Fire Quickly Extinguished At Waterloo’s Library

The Waterloo Fire Department put out a small electrical fire last week at Morrison Talbott Library. On Nov. 29, a light located in the ceiling behind the check out area caught on fire. Library employees called 911 and asked all patrons to exit the facility. Waterloo firefighters were also able to determine the fire had not traveled beyond the light fixture.

“It was reassuring to the staff and patrons to know the fire department was able to arrive so quickly,” said librarian Elaine Steingrubey. “The library is abundant with items that burn easily.”

As a reminder, during the upcoming holiday season, the Morrison Talbott Library will be closed on the following days: Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Ashley Cohoon Named New County Coordinator

Newly-appointed Monroe County Coordinator Ashley Cohoon is welcomed by Monroe County Commissioners, left to right, Delbert Wittenauer, Dale Haudrich and Terry Liefer.

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners has named a former intern in the city manger’s office at Centralia as its new county coordinator. The announcement was made Monday at the board’s meeting. She will begin work Dec. 17.

Cohoon was hired after Marc Kurtz resigned earlier this year as the county’s economic development director. In her job with the county, Cohoon will be responsible for coordinating board meetings, managing the board’s budget process, overseeing specific programs, participating in county committees and otherwise assisting the county board.

Cohoon is a recent graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a master’s degree in public administration. She has been with the Centralia city manager’s office as an administrative intern.

The commissioners re-elected Dale Haudrich as chairman of the board and Terry Liefer as vice chairman. Haudrich was also reappointed to the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council. Liefer accepted a position as the ICIT representative, replacing the retired Robert Rippelmeyer. The third commissioner, Delbert Wittenauer, was reappointed to the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement Board.

Also during last Monday’s board of commissioners meeting, Monroe County Assessor Carl Wuertz introduced Kenny Sondag as a new deputy assessor. Reappointments included Carla Heise, Dale Haudrich and Charles W. Kujawski Jr. to the Monroe County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Board.

The Columbia Police Department issued 108 citations in November during its enforcement zone checkpoints. The zones were located along the Admiral Parkway corridor near all of the major stoplight intersections. Roughly 30,000 vehicles daily travel along the Admiral Parkway corridor.

“The largest concentration of traffic crashes occurs in this part of the city, usually at or near the stop light intersections,” said Columbia Deputy Police Chief Jerry Paul.

Columbia officers issued 93 citations for failing to wear a seat safety belt, three citations for failing to secure a child in the proper child car seat, made one arrest for driving under the influence, cited four drivers with suspended driver’s licenses and four uninsured motorists, made two drug arrests, cited three equipment violations and made one outstanding warrant arrest.

“Less than 8 percent of the citations were issued to Columbia residents,” Paul said.

On the rest of those cited, 49 percent were Illinois residents outside of Columbia and 43 percent lived out of state. During November 2007, Columbia police officers investigated 26 traffic crashes, with two reporting alcohol as a factor and two reporting injuries. This is a slight increase in accidents with a slight decrease in injuries compared to last year, reports Paul.

“In cooperation with our community, the Columbia Police Department will continue our goal to reduce all types of traffic crashes, making the roadways safer for everyone,” Paul said.
