Schlick Ice Advisory - December 15, 2007

Snow And Ice Blanket Monroe County

A driver lost control of their Jeep Cherokee this morning on Route 3 in Waterloo. The vehicle rolled through a ditch and landed on its side between Columbia Avenue and Illinois Ave. The drive received minor injuries.

The Monroe County Independent weather bureau is declaring a schlick-ice advisory on all area hard roads. A wintry mix fell in the county overnight leaving roadways covered in a layer of sleet and snow. The county’s main arteries, Route 3 and Route 156, are covered in a layer of slush, but are navigable. Traffic is moving, but at a reduced speed. Road crews were out overnight putting down a layer of salt to keep the highways open. Most county roads and city streets are very schlick, causing numerous accidents.

“Don’t drive unless you have to,” said Waterloo Police Officer David Midkiff. “Stay inside today if you can.”

The worst accident so far this morning occurred on I-255, just east of the J.B. Bridge. A semi-tractor trailer collided with a compact car. One person was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital. The roadway on the bridge remains very schlick.

The National Service has declared a winter storm warning for the entire Metro East, which remains in effect until midnight tonight. Snowfall is expected to resume this afternoon with accumulations predicted to be four to seven inches. The temperature today is not expected to go above 30 degrees, which may cause a layer of black ice to form on roadways.
