Roadways Covered In Schlick Ice - December 15, 2007

Schick Ice Warning Remains For County

Cameron Hutchinson, left, help out his father, Columbia Mayor Kevin Hutchinson, clean off the sidewalk in front of Columbia City Hall earlier today. “We’re making sure it is safe for Santa’s arrival today at the Santa Hut,” said Cameron.

As the sleet and snow continue to fall and temperatures hover just below the freezing mark, roadways remain icy this evening. Area police officers and deputies continue to handle numerous accidents on Monroe County roadways. The most dangerous appears to be Route 3 between Columbia and Waterloo. Although IDOT crews continue to spread salt and scrape, driving along the highway remains a treacherous task for motorists. Since about 7 p.m., a vehicle is reported to have run off the roadway nearly every 15 minutes. Tow truck drivers are working as fast as they can to pull vehicles out of ditches. None of the accidents resulted in serious injuries.

Other schlick patches include the Route 158 / Route 3 interchange, Bluff Road and Maeystown Road.

The Humane Society of Monroe County’s Jingle Bell Walk is still on for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Monroe County Courthouse. “It’s still a go,” said Paula Hutchinson, one of the event’s organizers.
