Iraq War Veteran Eckert Honored During Visit Home

Waterloo Mayor Tom Smith, second from right, presents First Lt. Casey Eckert with a plaque honoring his service during the Iraq War.

Army First Lieutenant Casey Eckert spent the holiday with his family and friends. Eckert is serving in the 111th engineering battalion stationed in Daqreet, Iraq. He is the son of Glen and Nancy Eckert of Waterloo. During last Wednesday’s council meeting, the Waterloo City Council recognized Lt. Eckert for his service to the country.

Ss. Peter and Paul of Waterloo’s Monsignor Flach was able to sneak away from Barnes Hospital in St. Louis to lead the Children’s Christmas Eve Mass. He has been a patient at Barnes’ rehabilitation facility after being diagnosed this fall with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The syndrome has caused Flach to lose some mobility in his arms and legs. He has also lost 30 pounds, but has a very positive attitude.

He made his appearance at the Mass in a wheel chair and watched the school children perform their nativity scene.

“He showed tremendous courage to be there and everyone gave him applause after his homily,” said parishioner David Kennedy.

Flach, 62, said he has made some progress toward recovery, but still has a long way to go.
