Cars Slides Into Creek Along Route 3

A woman received only minor injuries this afternoon after her car slid off of Route 3 and into a creek bed about 20 feet off the roadway. The incident occurred at 4:50 p.m., near the intersection of Route 3 and Illinois Avenue near the Durham bus garage in Waterloo.

The yet unnamed woman was driving a Ford coupe southbound on Route 3 when she apparently fell asleep at the wheel, reported Waterloo Police Officer Dave Midkiff. Waterloo firefighters assisted Monroe County Ambulance Service EMTs in getting the person out of the car and into a waiting ambulance. She was transported to Red Bud Regional Hospital.

“She was shaken up a bit, but her injuries were not serious,” said Midkiff.

Traffic along Route 3 was redirected along Illinois Avenue and Moore Street as emergency workers handled the scene. Both lanes of traffic were re-opened at 5:15 p.m.

Furnace Causes Fire That Destroys Barn

Firefighters work to put out yesterday’s barn fire in Fountain.

A furnace sparked a fire yesterday afternoon in a barn on Bluff Road in Fountain. The barn, owned by Shirley Mueller, was rented to Larry Mueller as an auto body shop. When they got home from school at 3:45 p.m., Carley and Samantha Forehand noticed smoke coming from the barn located next to the farm house their parents rent from Shirley Mueller. They immediately called the emergency dispatcher. Firefighters from Valmeyer were soon joined by departments from Waterloo, Columbia and Maeystown.

Firefighters worked quickly to put out the blaze and had it under control in about one-half hour. They were able to save a concrete truck and a restored Ford Mustang that were stored inside.

“A furnace inside the barn seems to be the hot spot and likely started the fire,” said Valmeyer Fire Chief Floyd Floarke.

The barn was not believed to be salvageable and may be torn down.

Valmeyer firefighter George Brady, left, exits the burning barn as Maeystown Fire Chief Lyndie Prange drives a cement truck safely out of the burning structure.
