A retirement party was held today at First Bank in Columbia for longtime employee Jane Menner. Those stopping the open house included former co-workers Gene Haller, Shirley Bergmann, Steve Dressler and David Asselmeier. Melissa Grimm won the Best of Show award for her artwork submitted to the Gibault High School Art Contest. Sunday Recent Obituaries Ralph Frank Jr., 82, of Waterloo, died Feb. 13, 2008, in St. Louis. He was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Merrimac, the son of the late Ralph Sr. and Louise (nee Naumann) Frank. Survivors include wife Pat (nee Cotton) Frank; children Chris (JoAnn) Frankof Waterloo and Connie (Nino) Cammarata; grandchildren Sarah Frank, Alaina Wilson, Emily Wilson, Josh Frank, and Nick and Tony Cammarata; and sisters Beulah Bohnemeier and Edna "Sis" Arras. He was preceded in death by brothers Earl, Roy, Edward "Buddy" and Morris Frank; and sister, Evelyn Riebeling. Visitation is Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Aurelia Thoma, 81, of Columbia, died Feb. 14, 2008 at Columbia Convalescent Center. She was born March 8, 1926, in Columbia, the daughter of the late Ludwig Herrmann and the late Louisa Menner. She married Lorenz Thoma in 1946. He preceded her in death. Survivors include daughters Sharon (John) Durrer of Waterloo, Jean (Mike) Tiff of Columbia, Cathy (James) Evans of Glen Carbon and Linda Robitsch of Columbia; sisters Dorothy Jehling of Waterloo and Bernice (Tom) Wightman of Waterloo; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Herrmann; and a sister, Marcella Spitz. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Visitation is Sunday, Feb. 17, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, Feb. 18, 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia, with Fr. Steve Gira officiating. She will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School Education Fund or the American Diabetes Association. Ardel Mueller nee Hoffmann, 87, of Fults, died Feb. 11, 2008 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born March 13, 1920 in Maeystown, the daughter of the late Edwin and Rose (nee Lehman) Hoffmann. Survivors include children Ross (Dorothy) Mueller of Fults and Waleah (Lennis) Lich of Waterloo; grandchildren Dan Mueller (fiancé Saundra Weber), Dawn (Jason) Goff, Aaron (Jennifer)Lich, Allison (Timothy) Tronnes and Amanda Lich (fiancé Jason Kunash); great-grandchildren Abbey and Drew Goff and Gavin Lich; siblings Lee (Grace) Hoffmann and Kay (Dennis) Ritzel; sisters-in-law Telka Schatte and Dorothy Hoffmann; and brother-in-law, Warren Osterhage. She was preceded in death by husband, Halbert "Ham" Mueller; brother, Kermit Hoffmann; sisters Dorothy Hoffman and Ada Osterhage and brother-in-law, Vernon Hoffman. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ of Maeystown and the St. John's Women's Fellowship. A visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. John UCC of Maeystown, with Pastor Patrick Poole officiating. She was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church. Melvin Arb, 93, of Columbia died Feb. 14, 2008. He was born on June 1, 1917 in St. Louis, the son of the late Nicholas and Mathilda (nee Schwendman) Arb. Melvin was retired from Emerson Electric in St. Louis, Mo. He was the husband of the late Loretta (Roediger) Arb. They were married in Columbia in 1945. Survivors include nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Visitation is Saturday, Feb. 16, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Lawlor r Funeral Home. Funeral is Saturday, 1 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. He will be buried at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund. Ila Mae Gaither, 69, of Cahokia, died Feb. 13, 2008, at her residence. She was a homemaker and member of Assembly of God Church. Survivors include husband, Marvin Gaither of Cahokia; mother, Della nee Lindsey Edwards; children Terri (Michael) Harashe of Dupo, Tammie Gaither of Cahokia and Anthony Gaither of Cahokia; grandchildren Matthew Amanda) Davidson of Dupo, Christopher (Jessica Fry) Narez of Cahokia, Devin Narez of Cahokia and Jessica Latimer of Cahokia; great-grandchildren Lonnie Darter, Penny Darter and soon-to-be born Lane Davidson; and sisters Linda Earnhardt, Wanda Ross and Myrna Fields. She was preceded in death by her father, Kelly Edwards. Visitation is Sunday, Feb. 17, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. A service will follow at the funeral home, with Rev. Ernest Puckett officiating. She will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Breaking News - February 15, 2008
Three Vehicles Collide In Valmeyer At least one person was taken by ambulance this morning to an area hospital following a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Bluff Road and W. Woodland Ridge in Valmeyer. Two trucks and a SUV collided at about 8:10 a.m. Names of the victims and the cause have not yet been released.
