Columbia Boys Advance To Sectional Tourney: The Columbia Eagles boys’ basketball team defeated Central in overtime Saturday night to win the Class 2A Columbia Regional title. With the clock running out in overtime, guard Tory Arzola drove the lane and sank a lay-up for a 42-40 victory. On Tuesday night, the Eagles will play White Hall North Green in the Nashville Sectional. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. Waterloo High School begins their boys’ basketball playoff season Monday night in Mascoutah. They will face off against Freeburg in a Class 3A Regional Tournament game. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Bring Championship To McKendree Led by several Monroe County players, the McKendree University hockey team won first place in the Division II Silver League. The team finished the season with a record of 22-6 and received a bye in the first round of the upcoming playoff tournament. Local players include Steve Lee, Jordan Thompson, Ryan Haeffele, Nick Dreyer, Z.T. Evans and John Moore. In their league championship game against Missouri State University-White, Evans started the scoring for McKendree with a goal in the first period. Haeffele and Thompson also had an assist in the game. With the score tied 5-5 after regulation, McKendree was able to put the puck in the net first in the sudden death overtime for the victory.
Dale and Charlotte Mattingly of Columbia recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. To mark the occasion, they gathered with family for fish dinners at the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club.
The annual Maeystown Spring Art Show is scheduled for March 8 and 9. Events will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Corner George Inn and the Maeystown Mill and Museum. Featured artists this year are Joyce Blanquart-Neutzling and David Henerfauth. Neutzling, of Red Bud, has studied painting at Belleville Area College under Dale Threlkeld and Wayne Shaw. She has entered shows throughout the Metro East and St. Louis. She has also attended workshops in the Southern Illinois area and paints with a group of ladies in the Waterloo area. Henerfauth, a lifelong rural Monroe County resident, returns to the Spring Art Show with current works reflecting the beauty of the Maeystown and Old Valmeyer areas. He uses a multi-media display of painting, drawing and photography. He previously presented a retrospective of art of Maeystown, which he created through the years, starting in 1957 at the age of nine years. Some of the art work will be for sale. Zion UCC of St. Joe will be selling chili, hot dogs, desserts, coffee and soda on the lower floor of the mill. The event is sponsored by Historic Maeystown and the Maeystown Preservation Society.
Recent Obituaries Robert Reed, 63, of Waterloo, died Feb. 23, 2008, in St. Louis. He was born Oct. 27, 1944 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late George and Esther (nee Noonan) Reed. Survivors include wife, Sandra Reed; children Kelly (Brett) Schipkowski of Edwardsville, John Reed of Waterloo and Katherine “Katt” Reed of Waterloo; grandchildren Olivia Reed and Kendra Zachary Schipkowski; sister Sharon (Steve) Dodson of Mehlville, Mo., Tom Reed of Orlando, Fla. and Dan (Cheryl) Reed of Ballwin, Mo.; sisters-in-law Sharon Gustafson, Bobbie (Doug) Isham and Gloria (Steve) Klopf; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation is Thursday, Feb. 28, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, Feb. 29, 10 a.m., at the funeral home, Pastor Matt Friz officiating. He will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Lester Deffenbaugh, 93, of Columbia, died Feb. 24, 2008, at Columbia Convalescent Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1914 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Charles and Katherine (Vollmer) Deffenbaugh. He married Olivia (Mueller) Deffenbaugh in 1940. She survives him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Doris (David) Bound of Conway, Ark., Shirley (David) Asselmeier of Columbia and Carol (Ben) Bergmann of Columbia; son, Charles (Kimberly) Deffenbaugh of Columbia; sister, Vera Maurer of Freeburg; grandchildren Todd (Melissa) Bound, Cindy Pitts, David “Buzz” Asselmeier, Brian (Wendy) Bergmann, Christopher (Kristy) Bergmann, Leslie (Corey) Dickerson and Adam Deffenbaugh; and 11 great-grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Charles Asselmeier; brothers Byron, Vernon, Dale and Homer Deffenbaugh; and a sister, Helen Wilson. He retired as the president of Monroe National Bank in Columbia after more than 37 years of service. He was a life member of the Columbia Gymnastic Association, a 50-year member of the Columbia Blue Lodge 474 AF and AM, American Red Cross, a past president of the Columbia P.T.A., Monroe County Farm Bureau, a charter member of the Toastmasters and Columbia Lion's Club, Scottish Rite, American Bankers Association and St. Paul UCC of Columbia. Visitation is Wednesday, Feb. 27, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at St. Paul UCC of Columbia. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. He will be buried at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the church’s elevator fund.
