Linda Lehr Named County Coordinator: Linda Lehr of Millstadt has been named the new County Coordinator for Monroe County. She replaces Ashley Cohoon who recently stepped down from the position to accept a job at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Lehr will serve as a liaison between the Monroe County Board of Commissioners and county offices, county programs, community organizations and businesses.

Lehr possesses a background in business communications, public relations and government. 

“I enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to work with the commissioners, officials and people of Monroe County,” said Lehr. “Monroe County has a rich heritage and is poised for a strong and positive future.” 

 

Two cars collided Monday on the north end of Columbia. Willie Phillips, 87, was driving his four-door Dodge on Old State Route 3 and attempted to cross Palmer Road in order to get to Ghent Road. He cut into the path of a Mercury Cougar driven by Natalie Arras of Columbia. There were no injuries. Phillips was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection.

 

The Valmeyer Junior High School Ladycats won the Gibault Jr. High Volleyball Tournament last week. In the championship game, the Ladycats defeated the Smithton Cougars. Valmeyer last won the tournament in 2000. The team is, left to right, first row, Madison Wuertz, Andi Inman, Bree Whittington, Abby Redohl, Courtney Eschmann and Megan Mosbacher; and second row Coach Jenny Kohnz, Karlie Knobloch, Laura Berry, Paige Whipple, Caitlin Nappier, Aubrey Gunn and Coach Mary Neff.

 

Columbia police have beefed up security at the public safety complex and at city hall in light of a telephone threat by a Waterloo man. The man, whom police did not identify, had been arrested and charged by Columbia police for a previous offense. He now faces additional charges related to the threats, according to Monroe County State’s Attorney Kris Reitz.
 

Change Your Batteries: With daylight saving time beginning this weekend, area fire departments remind everyone to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
 

Coach Corsi Honored: Gibault High School’s Jim Mr. Corsi has been named IHSA Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.

The Monroe County Democratic Central Committee
held its party convention March 5 at the Monroe County Courthouse. The committee unanimously re-elected Alan Pirtle of Columbia as its chairman, Gary Roever of Waterloo as secretary and Jon Lewis of Columbia as treasurer. Lewis was also unanimously elected vice-chairman of the party replacing Sandy Sauget of Waterloo.

Sauget decided to step down when this term ended to spend more time with her family and other commitments. She will remain a precinct committeeman and the president of the Monroe County Democrat Club. 

“Sandy remains one of the leading Democrats in the county,” said Pirtle. “Much of what I have done as party chairman over the last four years, I learned from watching Sandy Sauget when she was chairman before me.”

 

Officers were elected to the Monroe County Republican Central Committee on March 5 during their biennial convention. The officers are Myron Neff of rural Waterloo, re-elected as committee chairman; Alan Lesko of rural Columbia, vice-chairman; Chuck Asselmeier of Columbia, secretary; and George Obernagel of Waterloo, re-elected as treasurer. Retiring Secretary Sheryl Prange stepped down from her position after many years of service. Other business was also conducted during the convention. Committee structures were reviewed and Chairman Neff requested volunteers for preferred committees be appointed by the committee’s next meeting. Delegates and alternate delegates for the State Republican Convention in Decatur on June 6 and 7 were asked to sign up.

In the 2008 Primary election, Republican committeemen were elected in 35 of 37 precincts in Monroe County. The committeemen are listed on the website: www.monroecountyrepublicans.org

 

Columbia High School and Middle School students performed the Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway play, “You Can’t Take It With You,” last week. “The play was a great success due to the wonderful cast and crew. It was enjoyed by all in attendance,” said Director Mary Beth Scherr-Babcock. Having starring roles were Dan Heise, Emily Brutton, John Heeg, Ethan Groce, Chris Clyde, Frankie Colston, Sarah Spradlin, Josh Buechler, Amanda Dailey, Andrew Baugh, Blake Stumpf, Caroline Thoma and Becca Thompson.



 

Teams led by sisters Linda Newbern and Carol Postlewait, Helfrich girls from home, finished in first and second place respectively on March 1 at the All-American girls’ softball team trivia night at the SPPS gym.
 

Re / Max Opens New Waterloo Office: There will be a ribbon-cutting on March 13 at Becky Vogt and Brad Krueger’s new Re/Max Preferred office in Waterloo. It is located at 873 North Route 3 in the North Pointe Plaza. The event will take place at 4 p.m.

Recent Obituaries

James Wenkel, 49, of Columbia, died March 5, 2005 at his residence following a long battle with cancer. He was born January 23, 1959 in Belleville, the son of Kenneth and Delores (Tebbenhoff) Wenkel of Columbia, who survive him. He married Peggyann (Grueninger) Wenkel in 1998. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kristen Rodriquez of Columbia; son, Jason Rodriquez of Columbia; sister, Janice (Gene) Blandford of Waterloo; and mother-in-law, Evie Grueninger of Columbia; along with other relatives and friends. Mr. Wenkel was employed as a shipping supervisor with Ehrhardt Tool and Machine Co. of Granite City. He was an avid bowler and loved camping and the outdoors, not to mention a good game of Kloepper. A memorial mass will be Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Doris Rodenberg, 76, of Prairie du Rocher, died March 4, at Red Bud Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 24, 1932 in Belgique, Mo., the daughter of the late Frank and Estell (nee Evans) Mattingly. She married Delbert Rodenberg in 1953 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Renault. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rodenberg is survived by children Darrell Rodenberg of Prairie du Rocher, Debbie (Bob) Schilling of Valmeyer, Donna (Steven) Yeater of Waukegan and Denise Rodenberg of Prairie du Rocher; brother, Dale (Charlotte) Mattingly; grandchildren Eric Rodenberg, Joshua Rodenberg, Wendy Schilling, Tiffany Signaio and Steven Yeager; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. She worked at AFCO / Singer and then the laundry department at the Ruma Convent for more than 10 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher. She was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud.

James Schulein, 68, of Belleville, died March 2, 2008 at Greeff Hospice House in St. Louis, Mo. He was born March 7, 1939 in Evansville, the son of the late Cletus and Mary (Petry) Schulein. Survivors include siblings Robert Schulein of Ellis Grove, Paul (Marie) Schulein of Evansville, Tom Schulein of Evansville, Frances Chapman of Ruma and Ronald “Pete” (Cathy) Schulein of Evansville; sister-in-law Charlotte Schulein of Baldwin and special friends Lisa (Jim) Leonard of Prairie du Rocher, Fran (Tim) Durbin of Prairie du Rocher, Nancy (Bryan) Bergmann of Columbia and Tim (Michelle) Burns of Fults; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Elroy (Ellamae) Schulein, Lloyd Schulein and Edward (Pearl) Schulein; and a sister, Ernestine Schulein. Mr. Schulein was an Army veteran and was employed as an operating engineer for Local 520 in Granite City for 38 years. He was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Walsh, American Legion Post 622 in Prairie du Rocher and VFW 2698 in Sparta. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral was at St. Pius Catholic Church in Walsh, Father John Joyce officiating. A military graveside service under the direction of American Legion Post 622 was held at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice Development.

Hulda Rafferty nee Thiele, 93, formerly of Waterloo, died Jan. 24, 2008 at Eaglecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation n Ask Flat, Ark. She was born Jan. 12, 1915 in Maeystown to the late Herman and Emma (nee Faus) Thiele. Survivors include a son, Philip (Cathleen) Rafferty of Arcata, Calif.; a step-daughter, Sally Henseley; two step-grand-daughters; sister, Eileen Hoffman of Waterloo; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Rafferty; and sister, Dorothy Hergenroeder. A memorial service will be held in March in Arkansas.
