Weekend Update - March 9, 2008

Columbia Karate Academy students demonstrated their ability during Saturday night’s Waterloo High School Variety Show. They were among the groups of entertainers and musicians who participated in the annual event.

The Monroe County Farm Bureau held their 91st annual meeting Saturday evening at Turner Hall. The board of directors is. left to right, first row, Darren Johanning, Roger Schaefer, President Ellery Hawkins, Glen Mueller, Adrian Crook and Gary Koenigstein; and second row, Dan Mueller, George Obernagel, Mark Hoffmann, Ken Hartman Jr., Dave Krebel and Butch Robert.


 

Helen Gregson wrapped up the bacon she won today during the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club Meat Shoot. “I hope Grandma Jeanette grills it up for breakfast soon!” said Helen.


 

A Pomeranian puppy was the star of the SS. Peter and Paul Grade School’s Spring Gala on Saturday night at the Hecker Community Center. The pup was donated to the event by school Principal Lisa Buchheit and brought in $700 for the school. Monsignor Thomas Flach was happy to be able to attend the event. He currently is undergoing physical therapy treatments at Oak Hill in Waterloo. “I'm gaining more use of my arms and legs,” said Flach, who is afflicted with Guillain Barre Syndrome.


 

Murphysboro native Matt Chancey plans to throw his hat into the local political ring by running for as a Republican candidate for State’s Attorney in the November election. He will face Democrat Kris Reitz, the incumbent, for the seat.


German Good Friday Service Continues 167 Year Old Tradition: Continuing a 167-year-old tradition, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg will host Good Friday services in the German language on Friday, March 21. The service begins at 10 a.m. with Rev. Darwin Schrader of Lebanon as the guest preacher. Visitors of all faiths are invited to attend. The Holy Cross Lutheran Ladies Aid Society will provide a luncheon following the service.
