Breaking News - March 10, 2008

Two Construction Workers Buried In Millstadt

Emergency personnel continue in their effort to rescue two construction workers buried at 3:10 p.m. today at the future site of the new Millstadt sewer treatment plant. The two men were buried in a muddy ditch just to the north of the plant building. Millstadt firefighters and EMTs are being aided by Swansea firefighters and the St. Clair County Emergency Response team.

Initial reports are one man is completely buried and the second was buried up to his neck. As of 4:20 p.m. both men were still trapped. The plant is located off of East Laurel Street.


News Update - March 10, 2008

There are reports coming from Millstadt that the emergency personnel working at the site of the Millstadt Sewer Treatment plant have switched their effort to a recovery of the bodies. It is not believed the men have survived after they were buried when a trench collapsed.

 

The Columbia High School boys track team started their competition last Saturday at the Southern Illinois University Indoor Track Invitational. Joe Streepy was the top Eagle. He qualified for the finals and finished 11th in the 55-meter high hurdles.

 

Recent Obituary

Windel M. Kult, 77, of Columbia, died March 10, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. He was born Dec. 10, 1930 in Ashley, the son of the late Ed Kult and the late Mary Lawhorn. He married Rose (Haun) Kult in 1955. She survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Denise Dorner of St. Charles, Mo.; son, Keith (Kim) Kult of Waterloo; grandchildren Paul Jordan, James Copenhagen, Tonsie Springer, John Ney, Katie Warren, Stefan Kult, and Rebecca Kult; great-grandchildren Kaylee Fisk, Kennedy Jordan, Maddie Jordan, and Angel Springer; and brother, Roger (Josephine) Kult of Mission, Tex. He was preceded in death by son, Steven Kult; daughter, Beverly Sue Ney; and sister, Nadine Piotrowskie. Mr. Kult was a member of Columbia American Legion Post 581 and St. Paul UCC of Columbia. He was a retired Pipe Fitter for Ameren U.E. Visitation is Wednesday, March 12, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, March 13, 11 a.m., at the funeral home with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. He will be buried at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or St. Paul UCC.
