Burglary Suspect Wanted For Questioning

The Waterloo Police Department is asking for assistance in identifying a female scene in this surveillance tape from the Waterloo Walgreen’s. According to the police report, on Tuesday evening at 7:15 p.m., a young female walked entered the store. She is accused of leaving with either stolen merchandise or cash. Waterloo police officers are on the look-out for a small black car, possibly a Ford Escort which the woman is believed to have used as a get-away vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Waterloo Police Department at 939-3377.

More than six inches of rain fell throughout Monroe County since yesterday. Bill Koenigstein of Hecker said his rain gauge read between 6 and 7 inches when the rain was tapering off this morning. Brenda Seboldt said they got more than 6 inches at their farm in the Fults bottoms.

Those evacuated from their homes last night along Steppig Road have been allowed to return. It was determined that a large piece of wood was obstructing the flow of water through a spillway at the lake. After a Columbia firefighter removed the wood, the spillway’s channel was opened allowing the water level on the lake to recede.

High water levels are reported in Creek off of Ames Road in rural Monroe County. “What used to be a field is now a lake,” said Ruth Pope.

A vehicle attempting to cross the roadway became stuck. The driver was able to safely exit.

Prayers Are Requested: Joanne Meier is requesting prayers for her ailing husband. Rich is in critical condition at Missouri Baptist. He is suffering from complications following a heart condition.

Bill Gardner celebrated his 60th birthday Friday with a gathering of family and friends at the Westfallen Lake Clubhouse.

Sarah Kendall Gottmann, Rhonda Ritzel Bauer and Zoe Ann Schwarze were inducted into the Valmeyer Music Boosters Hall of Fame. They received their recognition Saturday evening during the Music Boosters Annual Dinner Theater. One of the highlights of the theater portion was Mayor Howard Heavner portrayal of an island native in the production of “Welcome To Pirate Island.”

JV’s was standing room-only Sunday evening for the celebration of its 23rd anniversary. Owners Jeff and Denise Vogt welcomed regular patrons, both old and new.

Lost Dog Report

The owners of Lilly the dog are offering a reward of $300 for her safe return. She was reported to have been spotted in the Valmeyer area earlier this week. Lilly has been missing since Feb. 25 when she did not return to her home near Camp Vandevanter in rural Waterloo. Those with information are asked to call Deena Baum at 618-580-9673.

Nelda C. Allscheid nee Nottmeier, 95, of Waterloo, died March 16, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born May 24, 1912, in Fults, the daughter of the late Fred and Catherine Nottmeier nee Nagel. She was married to the late Albert J. Allscheid. Mrs. Allscheid is survived by her children Jeanette Lentz of Wentzville, Virlyn (Janie) Allscheid of Waterloo, Melvin Allscheid of Waterloo, and Yvonne (Richard) Lammert of Waterloo; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; along with sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Darlene James; grandchildren Ted A. Lammert, Randy Lentz and Robin Krebel; great-grandchild Levi Voss; and 11 brothers and sisters. Mrs. Allscheid was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joe. She was also a member of Waterloo Senior Citizens and was a former member of the Ladies Guild at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover. Visitation is Wednesday, March 19, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joe, with the funeral to follow, Pastor Nancy Spier-Lee officiating. She will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joe.

Dorothy M. Schreder nee Fults, of Valmeyer, died March 17, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born March 15, 1925, in Fults, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Marie D. Fults nee Schoen. She was married to the late Edgar J. Schreder. Mrs. Schreder is survived by her children Terry (Judy) Schreder of Waterloo, Edgar J. (Myrna) Schreder of Waterloo, Dorothy (David) Marquardt of Olney, Dennis (Jody) Schreder of Valmeyer, Gary (Susie) Schreder of Valmeyer, Christopher (Michelle) Schreder of Waterloo, and Hope (Richard) Wienhoff of Millstadt; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Brenda Schreder of Waterloo; sister Berry Ramer of Waterloo; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Eugene J. Schreder, grandson Brian J. Schreder and sister Ruth Jarvis. Mrs. Schreder was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Valmeyer and St. Mary’s Mary & Martha Society. She was also a member of the Waterloo VFW Auxiliary. Visitation is Wednesday, March 19, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo, Msgr. Thomas Flach and Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. She will be buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Madonnaville. Memorials may be made in the form of Masses.

Jesse G. “Jack” Williams, 83, of Waterloo, died March 16, 2008, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. He was born May 3, 1924, in Trezevant, Tenn., the son of the late Daniel C. and Lessie Mae Williams nee Arnold. He was married to the late Mattie Sue Williams nee Moore. Mr. Williams is survived by his children Eulah Mae Williams of Dupo, Barty (Bonnie) Williams of St. Mary, Mo., Jesse Glenn (Sherry) Williams of Millstadt, and Penny Sue (Thomas) Dietz of Red Bud; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother Gayle (Kathy) Williams of Bertrand, Mo.; sister Faye Crum of East Prairie, Mo.; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Barty Williams Jr., two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Williams was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the Monroe County Farmers Market Association. Visitation and a funeral service were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. He is buried at Waterloo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

Marlene A. Mason nee Haas, 72, of Cahokia, died March 18, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born July 25, 1935, in St. Louis County, the daughter of the late Martin and Leona Haas nee Culp. She was married to Carol Mason of Cahokia. Mrs. Mason is survived by her husband; daughters Rhonda Kay (Rick) Gray of Dupo, Dawn Mason of St. Louis, and Lisa (John) Link of Waterloo; grandchildren Jason Gray, Jeremy Gray and Payton Link; sister-in-law Judy Haas-Broers of Wellsville, Kan.; nephews Brett Haas, Shane Haas and Ty Haas; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Merle Haas. Mrs. Mason was a member of First Congregational Church in Dupo. She worked as an administrative assistant at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis. Visitation is Friday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. The funeral will follow at the funeral home, Rev. Robert Lee officiating. He will be buried at Lakeview Gardens of Memory in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.

Leo G. Henke, 94, of Columbia, died March 19, 2008, in Belleville. He was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Waterloo, the son of the late Fred. D. and Caroline Henke nee Stemler. He was married to the late Vera W. Henke nee Osterhage. Mr. Henke is survived by his children Curtis J. (Mary Ann) Henke of Valmeyer, and Audrey (Gary L.) Loos of Columbia grandchildren Kevin J. (Dawn) Henke, Gary Alan (Pam) Loos, and Mark K. (Wendy) Henke; great-grandchildren Quinn Henke, Adam Henke, Evan Loos, Cory Loos, Michaela Loos and Aryn Henke; along with nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, granddaughter, brothers Ted Henke and Emil Henke, and sister Alice Coats. Mr. Henke was past president and member of Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, and was past president and present member of Zoar Church Fellowship. He was a member of Baum’s Cemetery Restoration and past board member and current member of Monroe County Farm Bureau. He was past member of the board of directors and past treasurer of Monroe Service Co., past member and past president of Waterloo Optimist Club, past member of IOOF Lodge in Waterloo, past member of the historical society and Footnotes Quartet, past member of Zoar Church Octet and Turners Society of Columbia, past member of Columbia Sportsman’s Club, past member of Monroe County Fair Association, and was a graduate of Baum’s Academy and School of “Hard Knocks.” He was the last of living member of the famed Foster Pond Cream Puffs baseball team which dominated the area ball diamonds in the 1920s and 30s. Visitation is Monday, March 24, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, Rev. Dwayne Dollgener officiating. He will be buried at New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar in Columbia. Memorials may be made to New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar.
