Memories of '93 Flood

Today's News - March 25, 2008

Flood Waters Receding

The waters of the Kaskaskia River are slowly returning back to their banks following last week’s flooding conditions. Several Randolph County country roads were flooded when creeks backed up along the Kaskaskia. One of the roads flooded was a section Scherle Road, above, in rural Evansville, which was flooded by Nine Mile Creek. “The road hasn’t been this flooded in many years,” said Emma Wienhoff.

The parking lot and walkway leading to Water Street Bar and Grill in downtown Evansville was flooded last week because of the rising level of the Kaskaskia River. The bar sits on a barge on the banks of the river and was not damaged by the flooding.

Last Hecker Bar To Close Next Monday

David Mooney, left, and Matt Liefer provided musical entertainment last Saturday night at Flo’s Bar in downtown Hecker. Bar owner Flo Rosenkranz announced her lease will not be renewed by the property owner and she will close the business on March 31.

The Monroe County Electric Co-Op met Monday night at the Hecker Community Center for the annual dinner and meeting. Nearly 300 rural electric co-op members attended the lively gathering. Board Chairman Terry Grommet said increasing government regulations are putting a strain on coal-producing power plants which will likely result in higher electric bills in the near future. He urged co-op members to contact their elected officials to ask them to push for realistic means to ensure a cheap and efficient means of providing electric power while also becoming more environmentally friendly.

Butch and the Polka Kings will play Saturday night, March 29, at the Heckerdome. The dance floor will be open from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Rock band Fountain Creek will play April 12 at Valmeyer’s Corner Pub.
