Today's News - April 17, 2008

The Friends of the Waterloo Park District Pool will meet Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m., at Zahnow Elementary School in Waterloo. The public is invited.

The Waterloo Police broke up an altercation last night among 12 juveniles. An employee at Subway on Mill Street in downtown Waterloo reported that several young men were fighting on the sidewalk in front of the store. Waterloo police officers quickly arrived on the scene and broke up the raucous. There were no injuries.

County Receives Emergency Generators

In an effort to enhance public safety throughout Monroe County, the Emergency Management Agency has received five trailer-mounted generators. The 60 kilowatt generators were obtained through a grant from the St. Louis Area Regional Response System. The equipment will be stored at the Hecker, Maeystown and Valmeyer Fire Departments, and two of the units will be kept at the Monroe County Highway Department in Waterloo.

“These units will ensure that shelter locations in the county will be operational regardless of the condition of the power grid, as well as maintaining service to critical facilities and infrastructures in the county,” said Gene Henckler, director of the local EMA office.

County board members Dale Haudrich, Terry Liefer and Delbert Wittenauer were on hand at the courthouse earlier this month when the generators arrived atop a semi-tractor trailer.

“Electrical power is a critical component in the response to and recovery from any disaster which may threaten the citizens of the county,” Haudrich said. “This equipment will be a tremendous asset in a time of need.”

Cassie Kostecki is recovering from a broken ankle. She is being treated by a physical therapist and is ready to get back to her job at Brown and James in St. Louis. Her mother, Connie (Kohlmeier from home) Kostecki is handling the nursing duties at home.

The Columbia School PTA’s annual Dinner / Auction is Saturday, April 19, at the Columbia American Legion Hall. Tickets are available by emailing Teresa Allen at tdallen@htc.net. or by phone at 281-8979.
