Aftershock Rolls Through County

United States Geological Survey has confirmed an aftershock at 10:14 a.m., measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale. The first earthquake was measured at 5.2 this morning at 4:37 a.m. There are no reports of damage or injuries because of today’s seismic events.

Former Monroe Countians Kevin and Susie Shevlin report the rumbling was felt all the way in Amelia, Ohio, just east of Cincinnati. The Shevlins’ daughter, Erin, attends Illinois College in Jacksonville. Both Erin and her roommate Laurie Barchet felt the earthquake and the aftershock.

John Conrad reports his family’s adopted tomcat, Carl, mysteriously opened the bedroom door about 20 minutes before the earthquake hit. When the bed started shaking Conrad and his wife, Jean Marie, both suspected Carl had cornered (or had been cornered) by one of the other family pets under the bed creating a ruckus. Jean Marie noted that both the house and bed withstood the earthquake without damage.

Nanette Gross’ parrot, Buffett began flapping its wings moments before the earthquake was felt by Nannette. “Animals are just amazing,” said Nanette.

Curt and Ericha Sondag’s dog Riley began walking on their bed just before the tremors began.

Will Harbaugh of Red Bud said a Tsunami occurred in the wake of the earthquake. He quipped that his wife Sue sleeps in a water bed and he told her be careful, here comes a "Sue-Nami." It is believed Sue didn’t have as much humor in the observation as her husband did.

Mike Hamby thought the family pet Buddy was really getting into scratching himself while on the bed. Mike’s wife, Sandy, told him that Buddy wasn't scratching at all, but the dog was looking around the bedroom wondering what was happening. “It sounded like a tornado coming through, but there was no wind or rain,” said Sandy.
