WHS Entertains During Assembly Honoring Academic Achievement

Several awards were handed out Friday morning to Waterloo High Schools students during the annual Renaissance Academic Assembly. This year's theme was WHS Students Go Wild for Good Grades. Among those honored were Outstanding Senior Boy and Girl, Bethany Benyo and Mitch Wattles; and National Merit Scholarship, Dennis Lin. Alexander Dunker of Waterloo and Kent Logsdon of Fenton, Mo., are recovering from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident May 12 at the intersection of Route 3 and Vandebrooke Drive in Waterloo. Dunker, 16, was driving a 1995 Pontiac Gran Prix on Vandebrooke Drive. According to the police report, Dunker pulled into the path of Logsdon, who was driving a Hyundai Elantra southbound on Route 3. Logdon was transported to Red Bud Regional Hospital and Dunker was taken to St. Anthony’s Medical Center. Dunker was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection.

 

A class of Zahnow first grade students was on a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo today when a bomb threat was called in. Zoo officials evacuated several buildings, but no evidence of a bomb was found. The park remained open during the incident. A chaperone said they saw several police officers throughout the park and there were numerous helicopters flying overhead. The Zahnow students, teachers and parents all returned home safely to Waterloo.

 

Car Hits Utility Pole Head-On

Linda Hannah of Baldwin received minor injuries on Thursday when she was involved in a one-vehicle accident in Burksville. According to the police report, Hannah, 54, lost control of her 1998 Plymouth four-door while driving on Kaskaskia Road, about one mile from Route 3. After going off the roadway, the car hit a mailbox and a fire hydrant before slamming into a utility pole. Hannah was transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.

 

Monroe County Ambulance Service will celebrate National EMS week May 18 with an open house. It will be 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the ambulance garage at 901 Illinois Avenue in Waterloo. There will be a tour of the facility and vehicles, car seat check point and bicycle helmet fitting. In addition, ARCH Air Medical will display a helicopter. Food will be provided.
 

A delegation from Porta Westfalica, Germany will spend time next week in their sister city of Waterloo. Their itinerary includes a potluck dinner at Westfalen Club House, attending the Waterloo Optimist Club Car Show on Sunday followed by a trolley ride to City Lakes Park, dining at the Waterloo Country Club, visiting Lincoln sites in Springfield and the Missouri Botanical Garden and a farewell dinner next Tuesday at the Waterloo VFW.

 

Columbia High senior Daniel Everding has received a four-year full tuition scholarship to the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he plans to study astrophysics. He is the son of Ray and Vicki Everding of Columbia.

 

This is the last weekend for Kaskaskia Roadhouse and Grill in Burksville. Owners Sharon and Ricky Muertz will be moving their operation to Maeystown. Their new restaurant, Stonebridge Grill, will open May 25 at the former home of Eschy’s.

 

Gary Kleinschmidt, the founder and manager of the Columbia Saints baseball team of the Mon-Clair Baseball League died earlier this week from cancer. A memorial took place Thursday at the Saints baseball diamond on Triple Lakes Road. He was buried next to the ball field.

 

Graduations this weekend include Valmeyer High School on Friday night and Columbia High School Sunday afternoon.

 

The Waterloo Junior High School track team won several honors May 12 at the state track meet at Rend Lake College. Top finishers on the boys’ team were Josh Rodenberg, fourth place, 1600m; Dan Amann, sixth place, 1600m run; and Zach Dhom, fourth place, long jump. The girls’ team was led by Erica Buerk, third place, 800m; Jenny Faus, sixth place, 1600m; Amanda Muehlberg, fifth place, fifth place, discus; and Shelby Nugent, Alexia Begis, Sarah Ratz and Erica Buerk, seventh place, 1600m relay.

 

The Waterloo Park District will conduct a public meeting Wednesday, May 21, to discuss the future of the district’s swimming pool. It will begin at 7:30 p.m., at Waterloo City Hall.

 

Wendy Reitz will attend tonight’s History Museum benefit Champagne and Diamond Gala at Gallagher’s with husband, State’s Attorney Kris Reitz, and father-in-law, Circuit Clerk Aaron Reitz. Last year Wendy was the grand prize winner of the diamond give-away.

 

St. Paul UCC of Waterloo’s vacation Bible school is June 9 through June 13. The theme is Surfin’ Through the Scriptures. For more information, call Jane Kramer at 939-7123.

 

The In the Moment Alzheimer Support Group will meet Thursday, May 29, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Oak Hill in Waterloo. This month’s topic is how to effectively communicate with someone who has Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The group is open to family members, caregivers or friends of someone who is experiencing memory loss. For more information, call Julia at 618-939-3488 ext. 1248.

 

Parents can receive valuable identification information for the children this weekend. The Columbia Police Department is sponsoring Operation Safe Kids at the MarketPlace on Friday, May 16, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, May 17, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Livescan Child ID system produces a biographical document containing a photograph, digitized inkless fingerprints and other vital identification information.

“This data is valuable in the event of an abduction or disappearance,” said Columbia Deputy Police Chief Jerry Paul.

There is no charge for the service.

 

Columbia High School students from farming families were allowed to bring their tractors to school today.

Recent Obituaries

Gary J. Kleinschmidt, 56, of Millstadt died May 12, 2008 at his residence after a battle with cancer. He was born March 7, 1952 in Belleville, the son of the late Milton and Izora “Dude” (Rujawitz) Kleinschmidt. He married Ann (Limestall) Kleinschmidt in 1976. She survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Doc (Michelle) Kleinschmidt, and Tyler Kleinschmidt; sister, Sharon (Robert) Skaer of Millstadt;  in-laws, Roy and Mae Limestall of Columbia; and brothers-in-law, Dennis (Nancy) Limestall of Schaumburg and Gary Limestall of Columbia; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Kleinschmidt was active with the Mon-Clair Baseball League and was the general manager of the Columbia Saints Baseball team. He was a retired grade school teacher for the Dupo Public School District. After his retirement, he returned to his great passion, growing vegetables on the family farm, cooking daily meals and eating together as a family. A funeral service was held at Kleinschmidt Ball Field, with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Memorials may be made to the Columbia Saints Baseball Team. 

Howard Scott Lively, 99, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died May 15, 2008, at The Lutheran Home. He was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Murphysboro, the son of the late Connie and Alma (Bolby) Lively. He married Loretta Siebert in 1938. She died in 1990. Mr. Lively was a bank teller, a salesman for So-Good Potato Chip Co. in St. Louis, Mo., owned a chicken farm and a restaurant in St. Louis County, ran a dairy farm in Waterloo and was the former owner and operator of Cape Egg and Feed Co., in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Survivors include sons Gary Lively of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Donald Lively of Bloomingdale; sister, Wanda Waters of Percy; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers. Visitation is Sunday, May 18, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, May 19, 10 a.m., at Vincent DePaul Church with Rev. David Hulshof officiating. He will be buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Olivia E. Deffenbaugh, 92, of Columbia, died May 16, 2008 at Delmar Gardens South in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Dec. 17, 1915 in Millstadt, the daughter of the late Edward and Emma (Remelius) Mueller. She married Lester Deffenbaugh in 1940. He died on Deb. 24, 2008. She was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Charles Asselmeier, and brothers, Arthur and Edward Mueller. Surviving are daughters Doris (David) Bound of Conway, Ark., Shirley (David) Asselmeier of Columbia and Carol (Ben) Bergmann of Columbia; son, Charles (Kimberly) Deffenbaugh of Columbia; grandchildren Tod (Melissa) Bound, Cindy Pitts, David “Buzz” Asselmeier, Brian (Wendy) Bergmann, Christopher (Kristy) Bergmann, Leslie (Corey) Dickerson and Adam Deffenbaugh; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Visitation is Monday, May 19, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at St. Paul United Church of Christ of Columbia. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. Lawlor Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. She will be buried at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul UCC Elevator Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
