Waterloo Welcomes German Visitors

 

A delegation from Porta Westfalica, Germany arrived Saturday afternoon to their sister city of Waterloo. The guests were welcomed by members of Waterloo Portaloo, Mayor Tom Smith and the Waterloo German Band. Everyone enjoyed a potluck dinner at the Westfallen Lake Clubhouse before adjourning for the evening. Sunday’s itinerary includes attending the Waterloo Optimist Club Car Show, a luncheon at City Lakes Park and a dinner at the Waterloo Country Club.

 

Landgraf Offers Helicopter Tours Of Waterloo

Monroe County native Brian Landgraf, chief pilot and manager of Gateway Air Tours of downtown St. Louis, temporarily stationed his sightseeing helicopter Saturday near the Waterloo Commons area on the north end Waterloo. Landgraf explained the Mississippi River was too high to operate from his usual base.

Monroe County Ambulance Service will celebrate National EMS week May 18 with an open house. It will be 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the ambulance garage at 901 Illinois Avenue in Waterloo. There will be a tour of the facility and vehicles, car seat check point and bicycle helmet fitting. In addition, ARCH Air Medical will display a helicopter. Food will be provided.
 




Don Gleiber was the lucky winner of a diamond Friday at Gallagher’s during the annual Monroe County History Museum Champagne and Diamond Gala.

The Waterloo Optimist Car Show is Sunday, May 18 in downtown Waterloo. Registration is 8 a.m. to noon, with trophies awarded at 3 p.m.

 

Recent Obituaries

Doris Jean Phelps, 81, of Columbia, died May 16, 2008, at Canterbury Manor Nursing Center. She was born Dec. 3, 1926 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Elmer and Ernestine (Kellerman) Reichert. She married William Phelps in 1946 in Columbia. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Cindy Heldt of Columbia; granddaughter, Sarah Heldt of Yellow Springs, Ohio; and brother, William (Mary) Reichert of Altus, Ohio. Visitation is Monday, May 19, 5 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, May 20, 10 a.m., at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan Peters officiating. She will be buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Alzheimer's Association of St. Louis.
