Dance Caps Off German Guests’ Visit To Waterloo The Porta Westfalica residents enjoyed five days of activities during their stay in Waterloo, which included sight seeing in Springfield and St. Louis, Mo. During their final evening in Waterloo on Tuesday, everyone gathered at the Waterloo VFW for a prime rib dinner and a dance featuring Elvis impersonator Steve Davis and the Waterloo German Band.
The Waterloo Park District will conduct a public meeting Wednesday, May 21, to discuss the future of the district’s swimming pool. It will begin at 7:30 p.m., at Waterloo City Hall.
The Waterloo Park District Pool will open May 24 for the 2008 summer swimming season with an open house cookout. The event will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the pool located at 316 North Library Street in Waterloo. A $6 admission ticket to the pool will include complimentary hot dogs, chips and soda.

Service Honored For Service To The Community
Recent Obituaries Russell William Peck, 79, of Dupo, died May 18, 2008, in Belleville. He was born Jan. 15, 1929, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Harry and Clare Peck nee Durnberg. He was married to Dorothy Peck nee Ross. Mr. Peck is survived by his wife; children Brian (Debbie) Peck of Collinsville, Kathy Pierce of Texas, Theresa Peck of Maryville, and Kathy (David) Simeral of Dupo; step-children Michael (Laurie) Stein of Hartland, Wisc., and Chris (Dianne) Stein of Columbia; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brothers Richard Peck and Norman Peck; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife June Peck; and brother, Randy Peck. Mr. Peck was a member of First Baptist Church in Dupo. He retired from Granite City Steel and later worked for 10 years and retired from the local labor union. Visitation was at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home. A funeral service was at First Baptist Church in Dupo with Rev. Rick Lay officiating. He was buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Dupo Building Fund. Sandra M. Akin nee Mathews, 46, of Waterloo, died May 18, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born Oct. 19, 1961, the daughter of Dale Mathews of Waterloo and Delores Mathews nee Campbell of Poplar Bluff, Mo. She was married to Douglas Akin. Mrs. Akin is survived by her parents; husband; daughter Kailah Akin; brothers and sisters Linda (Keith) Lenox of St. Louis, Debbie (Jeff) Battin of Waterloo, Daniel Mathews of St. Louis, Dale Mathews of Waterloo and Mike Mathews of Waterloo; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert D. “Odie” Mathews. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was at St. Augustine Church in Hecker, Fr. Robert Gore officiating. She was buried at St. Augustine Cemetery in Hecker. Ruth Mae Gibson, 79, of Red Bud, died May 17, 2008, at deGreef Hospice House in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Aug. 10, 1928 in Modoc, the daughter of the late George and Caroline (Roth) Rudloff. She married Charles Gibson in 1960. He died in 1966. Also preceded her in death were sisters Corrine, Etta, Philomeana, Olivia, Lena, Elise, Bernice, Rosella, Taletha and Lorrine; brothers Gervase and Carol; and grandson, Eric. She is survived by daughters, Donna (Dale) Kirkley of Waterloo and Kathy Birke of Red Bud; and grandchildren Shannon (Ian) Birke, Scott (April) Kirkley, Alicia Kirkley and Nicole Chastain. Mrs. Gibson was a housekeeper who also worked as a janitor at Synder General in Red Bud and a cook at the Clementine Residence in Red Bud. Visitation and funeral were at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud, Rev. Mark Nebel officiating. She was buried at St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in Modoc.
