Their game against Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst began today at 11 a.m. at North Central College in Naperville. Columbia leads 2-0 at halftime. The score can be checked at www.ihsa.org. Monroe County area residents will have several opportunities to observe Memorial Day by attending ceremonies dedicated to recognizing veterans. The first event will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 26, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church Cemetery in Hecker. A flyover featuring a 1943 Navy Scout Bomber sponsored by Dave Renner will highlight the program. Valmeyer American Legion Post 901 and Auxiliary’s Memorial Day service is at 10 a.m. at the Legion Hall. Vietnam veteran Delos Pieper, who grew up in Monroe County, is the guest speaker. The Veterans of Foreign Wars in Waterloo will have a program beginning at 11 a.m. at the Courthouse lawn. VFW Post Chaplain Chuck Pittman will be the guest speaker. Columbia American Legion Post 581 and Auxiliary’s Memorial Day program is inside the post home beginning at 11 a.m. The guest speaker is Columbia Attorney Alan Pirtle. He was recently elected chairman of the state's county Democratic Party and heads up the Monroe County Democratic Central Committee. The Renault American Legion will conduct a Memorial Day Service beginning at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery. The public is invited to attend all the events.
For those watching Harrah’s Lucky Break this Saturday, be on the lookout for two local gals. Jan Eden of Columbia and Amy Wetzel of Waterloo each scored a perfect 21 for their singing performances. The karaoke show is aired at 10:30 p.m., on Channel 4.
Maeystown Homecoming Is This Weekend: The Maeystown Civic Association will roll out the red carpet for visitors at the annual Maeystown Homecoming on May 23 and May 24. It all starts at 4:30 p.m. on Friday evening. The food stand will serve up brats, fish, hamburgers, pork steaks, hot dogs and sides, plus on Saturday only fried chicken plates will be served. There will be plenty to do both evenings, including traditional games like the ball toss stand, picnic poker, chuck-a-luck, pull tabs and rides and games for the kids. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Fountain Creek Band on Friday night and Aftershock on Saturday night. The big parade is 6 p.m. on Saturday. Retiring Valmeyer School music instructor Marcia Braswell will be the grand marshal of this year’s Maeystown Homecoming Parade. It is scheduled to begin Saturday, May 24, at 6 p.m. Saturday the Maeystown Clovers 4-H club will have a Duck Race in the Maeystown Creek at 3:30 p.m. The third annual Creekside Cup Washer Tournament will take place down at the park beginning at 1 p.m. The Waterloo Municipal Band kicks off their summer concert season June 3. Director Sharon Ebersohl will raise her baton beginning at 8 p.m. The band offers the free concerts all Tuesdays in the summer through August 26. Concert goers are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. First National Bank of Waterloo CEO Gary Hemmer is celebrating his “Classic 55” birthday today, Friday, May 23. To commemorate this milestone, FNB employees surprised him with a University of Illinois rocking chair.
Recent Obituaries Arlou Koch, 75, of Columbia, died May 21, 2008, at her residence. She was August 25, 1932 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Frank and Hilda (Huch) Weilbacher. In 1949 she married August Koch in Columbia. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Larry (Caty) Koch of Wilton, Conn., Marty (Janet) Koch of Arnold, Mo., and Kevin (Cindy) Koch of Columbia; five grandchildren; a sister, Frances Foster of High Ridge, Mo.; and a brother, Joseph (Arleen) Weilbacher of Columbia; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers Willard and Norman Weilbacher; and a sister, Mary Ann Stahlmann. A memorial Mass will be Saturday, May 24, 9 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer and Fr. Steve Gira officiating. According to her wishes, Mrs. Koch donated her body for scientific study. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School Education Fund.
