Memorial Day Observed Throughout Monroe County

Car Upended In Memorial Day Accident

There were no injuries following a two-car pile-up Monday in Waterloo. The driver of a Dodge Stratus lost control of the vehicle at about noon on S. Library Street. The Stratus hit the side of a parked Dodge Intrepid and came to rest straddling the unoccupied vehicle. There were no injuries.     – photo by Ericha Sondag

 

Randolph County Man Dies While Attending Indianapolis 500

Mike Theis of Ruma died Sunday while attending the Indianapolis 500 car race in Indianapolis, Ind. with his family. Initial reports are that he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Theis, 43, was attending the event with his wife Cathy (Buss) Theis and several other family members.

Cathy called an ambulance after finding her husband unresponsive in their RV. Three others in the RV were rushed to the hospital with apparent carbon monoxide poisoning, including Cathy’s father, Charles Buss; her step-mother Deborah Buss; and relative Fred Buss.

A family friend did not know their current condition if the family members. Funeral arrangements are pending in Red Bud. Investigators are looking into the source of the toxic fumes.

 

A new Pizza Hut is under construction in Waterloo Commons along Market Street on the north end of Waterloo. Waterloo Zoning Department Director Lonnie Ludwig said it was his understanding Pizza Hut would vacate their leased property on North Market Street when the new location is ready to open.
