Columbia Police Bag Purse Bandit The Columbia Police Department arrested a St. Louis man on Wednesday accused of stealing purses from cars parked at child day care facilities throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area, including Columbia. Demarco L. King of 4211 Shenandoah in St. Louis was arrested by Columbia police officers Wednesday at 4 p.m. along I-255 between the Koch Road and Telegraph Road exits in South County. He was transported by to the St. Louis County District Four Precinct where he remains jailed awaiting charges for thefts in both Missouri and Illinois. According to the police report, King, 32, allegedly had stolen women’s purses in unlocked cars parked at area day cares. When mothers would go into the day care to pick up or drop off their children, the suspect would quickly take the valuables out of the front seats of unlocked cars, reports Columbia Deputy Police Jerry Paul. In the past couple months, similar thefts were reported in Chesterfield, Crestwood and Sunset Hills in Missouri and Columbia, Illinois. “Prior to Wednesday’s call at Lighthouse, Columbia officers recently investigated two similar purse incidents,” said Paul. “One was at the Lighthouse Learning Center on May 23, and the other at Hill Top Kids.” The suspect would then use the credit cards and cash at large retail stores to make purchases before the items were reported stolen, Paul added. In the past couple week, Columbia police officers canvassed the Southwoods businesses area for possible witnesses and informed the immediate community of these crimes. On Wednesday a person at Lighthouse Learning Center witnessed a man matching King’s description take a purse from the front seat of a car and quickly drive away in a black Honda car. A 9-1-1 call was immediately made and Columbia police officers headed to the scene. The witness provided the police with a detailed description of the suspect, the license plate number and direction of travel. The car was spotted leaving Columbia on Route 3 before turning onto I-255. The Honda was pulled over along the interstate a couple miles into Missouri. King was soon taken into custody. The investigative work conducted by the Columbia Police Department was submitted to Monroe County State’s Attorney Kris Reitz’s office for additional charges. “Due to the efforts of our officers getting the information out to the community and business people watching out for each other, together we were able to solve these crimes and assist with the investigation in Missouri,” said Paul.
