Celebrates Her Birthday Longtime Gibault High School teacher Sister Mary Bernard was treated to a surprise 90th birthday party Sunday at the school. Bernard mainly taught history classes during her employment from 1967 to 1987. She was also instrumental in organizing the girls’ sports program. “I truly enjoyed watching the students grow and learn,” Sr. Bernard said. “I always considered the students my little onions. Because they add flavor to life, but sometimes they can make you cry.” Sr. Bernard lives in Waterloo and frequently attends Gibault activities, especially girls volleyball and softball games.

Iris Buettner and Betty Wild celebrated birthdays June 3 at Fern and Fred Kinzinger’s home during one of their Tiebreakers Card Club parties. Hostess Fern provided a special cake with a candle that played “Happy Birthday.” Also in attendance were Joann Dietz and Rosemary Remiger.
A free Disaster Preparedness course will be offered Saturday, June 7, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo. The class will inform the participants on how to be ready and what to do in the event a disaster, like a tornado or earthquake, hits the community.

Recent Obituaries Floyd E. Gould, 83, of Port Orange, Fla., formerly of Columbia, died June 1, 2008. He was born April 27, 1925, in Cleveland, Ark., the son of the late Archie F. and Roxie Gould nee Nelson. He married the late Esther Gould nee Bequette in 1945; she preceded him in death in 2004. Mr. Gould is survived by his daughters Jeannie (Jimmie) S. Vanover of Port Orange, Fla., and Joni (Ernie) J. Chapman of Cartersville, Ga.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Delmar (Edith) Gould; and sister Faye (Ross) Hancock; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son James Gould, and daughter-in-law Mary Gould. Mr. Gould loved bluegrass music, sitting in his favorite chair and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, and, most of all, his grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, June 6, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. He will be buried at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Williams Syndrome Association. |
